Every October Catholic’s celebrate Respect Life month and as Sisters of St Joseph, we are committed to honoring and advocating for the seamless garment of life issues. We are especially committed to abolishing the death penalty, often led by the prophetic witness of Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ. Recently, Sister Helen’s book, Dead Man Walking, was made into a graphic novel by artist Catherine Anyango Grunewald. The death penalty has made headline news recently for several horrific reasons, and if you’re interested to know more about Sister Helen ministry on death row @helenprejean you should pick up a copy of Catherine Anyango Grunewald’s graphic novel and listen to our @beyondthehabitpodcast episode with Catherine.

Mary, Mother of Life, pray us and pray that our hearts and minds to turn towards a culture of life, and reconciliation.

Earlier this month, Maria and Grace attended the Florida Public Defender Association’s Life Over Death Conference. Grace spoke on the complexities of interacting with victim-survivors in capital cases, and Maria received the Jim Slater award. And, of course, they spent some time with Sister Helen!

Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty — and Governor Gavin Newsom’s birthday. We are calling on Newsom to make his birthday wish “to end the death penalty in California” come true. He has the power to commute the sentences of everyone on the state’s death row before the end of his term.

California’s death row is the largest in the nation — more than 560 people — despite Newsom imposing a moratorium on executions in 2019 and the state not having carried out an execution since 2006. TAKE ACTION NOW: Tell Governor Newsom to commute all death sentences in California NOW! Link in our bio.

6 days after not one, but two, failed attempts to execute #ChristaPike, she has just regained consciousness.

Her prognosis remains unclear... nobody has survived two executions attempts the way she has. We remain cautiously optimistic about her condition.

Gov. Lee has rightly called off executions for the remainder of the year to allow for an independent investigation into Tennessee's execution protocols. But he can and MUST go further.
