Let’s talk about one of my favourite food groups: PULSES

Most people think pulses are just chickpeas but they encompass lentils and beans as well. These foods are rich with indigestible fibre that can regulate your bowel movements 💩 and improve function. Pulses are nutritionally dense, packed with vitamins/minerals, fibre, and protein. They are small but mighty! Pulses also have a considerable amount of non-heme iron, which means that it has some issues latching onto the red blood cells but fret not, our good friend Vitamin C can help with that. Simply by having vitamin C rich foods with pulses, the iron can then be better absorbed by red blood cells!
Some vitamin C rich foods: tomatoes, oranges, strawberries

Pulses also have a special place in my heart because they hold a lot of cultural significance to me. The traditional Indian diet uses about 30% pulses in a variety of foods, this goes up considerably if you’re a vegetarian Indian. Pulses can be used in so many different foods!

A fun Fact about pulses: they are grown through the prairies in Canada, including my home province of Manitoba. Canada is one of the largest producers of pulses in the WORLD, with 80-90% of products grown in Ontario out for exportation. It’s amazing!

Enjoy the day and have a bowl of dhal!

Watermelon season hasn’t quite started here on the East Coast, but I’m ready. WellBe recently filmed an interview for our changemakers series and learned that watermelon has a high pH and more lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable, which makes it great for helping to heal acid reflux. Did you know that? I had no idea! Stay tuned for that interview and more healing foods. xx Adrienne #getwellbe [📷: @dr_esselstyn]
