#bookstagram #leggere #letture #labottegadellinvisibile #libribelli

It’s spooky season again and we have some Halloween book recommendations for you! Zack really enjoyed Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman. It’s a great creepy read you can finish in an evening but good luck getting to sleep after! Em recommends The Sluts by Denis Cooper. If you’re looking for an unsettling book that will linger, this is a good choice. It’s not technically horror but goes farther than most horror dares to go. Reader discretion is advised Collier recommends Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova! Luis recommends I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid. The greatest fear of all: wasting your life. Madi recommends The Obscene Bird of Night by José Donoso!

MONSTRILIO is a perfect blend of Frankenstein-esque horror if Frankenstein were two parents stumbling through the darkness of grief after losing their only son to something they knew he’d eventually succumb to. The anticipatory grief would have been enough to send them into a spiral, and when Santiago dies at the age of 11, the spiral worsens into a tornado. Magos, the mother, cuts a piece of Santiago’s lung and feeds it. It grows into something, but it’s not exactly Santiago 2.0. It acts feral and animalistic, killing and eating at first as it pleases, but Magos and Joseph (the father) swear that they can tame him. I read this as a metaphor of coming to terms with your child not being perfect. Santiago, when he was alive, was his parents’ best friend. He was the ideal, inquisitive son to them. But Monstrilio is hungry and violent. When we see M through the stages of his life while his parents move on after their separation, we see him as a toddler, an adolescent, and then finally at the end a young adult. I think this book is just as much about grief as it is about accepting the unpleasant, unexpected part of your child, and loving them unconditionally. A lovely book, and so great for the season! . . #monstrilio #horror #fiction #bookreview #bookstagram

#RecommendedReading Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova (@hello.samanito) This is a haunting story about grief and family in which a mother cuts away a part of her dead son that then grows into its own being/creature. It’s a queer norm world, and, best of all, a book that makes readers confront how to carry grief and love. #edicionescarnivora #monstrilio #gerardosámanocórdova

For Day 13 of our Halloween countdown, we’re going somewhere strange, emotional, grotesque, and completely unforgettable with Monstrilio by @hello.samanito If you like your horror literary, unconventional, and filled with deeper meaning beneath the disturbing imagery, this is one you need to experience. Monstrilio begins with grief and transforms it into something physical, monstrous, and strangely beautiful. At the center of the story is a family dealing with an unimaginable loss and the unusual creature that becomes intertwined with their lives. From there, the novel explores what it means to love something or someone even when that love becomes complicated, uncomfortable, and difficult for others to understand. What makes this such a fascinating Halloween recommendation is that the horror isn't simply about being frightened. There is BODY HORROR. There is blood. There are disturbing images and moments that remind you that Monstrilio is very much a creature with instincts of his own. But underneath everything grotesque is a surprisingly tender story about grief, identity, transformation, family, acceptance, and unconditional love. The story is also told through four different perspectives, allowing us to experience this strange family from several sides while watching their relationships evolve. Mexican folklore and elements of magical realism add another layer to a novel that constantly challenges the boundary between the human and the monstrous. It's bizarre. It's gruesome. It's tender. It's queer. It's heartbreaking. And somehow, it can also be incredibly beautiful. If your spooky-season reading includes literary horror, body horror, complicated families, folklore, queer stories, and books that leave you thinking about what actually makes someone a monster, add Monstrilio to your Halloween TBR. 13 DAYS UNTIL HALLOWEEN and this little monster is ready to join the countdown.

The nights are drawing it and it's getting colder out which makes it the perfect time to enjoy a good book and warming food (in this case, vegan fruit crumble and custard). I've been extremely lazy today and have done very little other than go out for Sunday lunch at @theangelmicrobrewery and then to @broadwaycinema to see a film. Eating out alone is something I do fairly often and I actually really enjoy it as gives me time to read while listening to other people's conversations around me. I recently started #Monstrilio by @hello.samanito I'd heard a lot of things about it and had seen it pop up in posts so figured it was time to pick up my copy which has been sat on my shelf for the last year. It's a weird and beautifully written book. I've not finished it yet so I have no idea how it's going to end but I'm loving what I've read so far and kind of don't want it to end as I could happily read more. A bronze coloured round tabletop on which sits a plate and book. The plate is square and white. On it sits a small orange dish when crumble and a silver jug containing custard. The book is a purple paperback. The title is written in bold, black text at the top of the cover. The rest of the cover is taken up with a black scribble with two little eyes looking out at the reader.
