Menopause: for the matriarchy or the patriarchy?

What if menopause isn’t simply a biological transition to manage, but a rite of passage deserving of stewardship?

I’ve been asking this question, and the conversations emerging have been extraordinary. So many people are saying they’ve never considered menopause this way before.

At the Family Stewardship Centre, we believe life’s major thresholds deserve to be witnessed, understood and supported.

But when the people who have spent their lives caring for others reach a threshold of their own, who is caring for them?

This is why we’re building Caregiving to Stewardship, preparing people already working in caregiving roles to understand midlife transitions through four relationships: self, intimate partners, family and work.

Because menopause shouldn’t mean navigating change alone, nor should caregiving mean carrying everything yourself.

💜 I’m curious: What would change if we treated menopause as a rite of passage rather than something to endure privately?

I’d love to hear your perspective.

I wish someone had told me that pain is part of the menopause conversation too.

Not just joint pain that wakes you at 3am, but sore feet, random jolts, and bladder changes that make you quietly rewrite your life. And if you have been through cancer, the extra layer of navigating all of this with very little joined-up support, if any.

For World Menopause Day on Oct 18, I'm hosting the conversation I wish I had a year ago, but it's never too late.

Pain, Intimacy and Life After Cancer. A free, live 60-minute panel with two wonderful clinicians I trust, Dr. Mary Elmasri and Dr. Claire Phipps. We will talk through what the evidence actually supports, what helps, and what to ask your own doctor, specialist or oncology team.

Oct 18 at 9am PT. Free, 100 seats, live Q&A. It's recorded, so if you can't make it live, register, and I will send you the replay.

This is the room I wanted but couldn't find, so I built it. You are so welcome here.

Where is Global Women’s Health Awareness Week? 🌍

Hello Nila is joining Her Health Digest in calling for a dedicated Global Women’s Health Awareness Week, creating a moment each year to put women’s health, research and awareness firmly on the global agenda.

💬 Why does women’s health matter to Hello Nila?

“Women’s health matters to Hello Nila because 51% of the population spends decades in a stage of life that medicine has barely studied, and everyone deserves clear, cited answers about their own body instead of being told to wait it out.”

💗 Add your name to the campaign:

🇬🇧 UK residents & British citizens: Sign the UK Parliament petition calling for an official Women’s Health Awareness Week in England: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/781595

🌍 Anywhere in the world: Sign the global campaign: https://www.change.org/globalwomenshealthweek

📧 Don’t forget to verify your signature by email for it to count.

Year 3 💗

CIBC Run for the Cure — Victoria, Oct. 4

Year 1: Fresh off a bilateral mastectomy + reconstruction. Lost, overwhelmed. I found community.
Year 2: One week post-hysterectomy with BSO. I showed up anyway.
Year 3: No surgeries. Second year as comms lead / committee member — grateful to have been held by this community, and now to help hold space for others.

All the hats (and tees to prove it):
🎗️ Participant of Hope
🎗️ Comms lead / Victoria committee
🎗️ Island Breaststrokers teammate
🎗️ Mammary Lane walked for me
🎗️ Hello Nila raffle donor alongside Outway

Three very different runs. Same community that found me on day one.

Thank you to everyone who walked, ran, volunteered, donated, and cheered. This community is everything. 💗

Today, I'm asking for a favour.

Nila is now Hello Nila. Same free guides, same promise, and a name that finally matches where people find us.

I started this because getting clear, sourced answers about perimenopause shouldn't take years. Hello Nila is plain-language hormone information for every body arriving at midlife.

We're early. We don't have a big ad budget. What we have is people, and that's where you come in.

Three things that would really help move the needle:

1) Repost this. Your network is bigger than our marketing budget.
2) Send it to one person who's in the thick of it.
3) If you work in health, HR, research, media, or investing, my inbox is open. I'm looking for allies, partners, and people who want to build this with us.

Early-stage startups grow on word of mouth. Thank you for being mine.

Where is Global Women’s Health Awareness Week?

“Women’s health matters to me because when women have access to the care and knowledge they need, entire families and communities become stronger.” - Erin Beattie, Canada

Men’s health has had a coordinated, globally recognised week since 2002.

Women’s health doesn’t. Instead there’s a scattered mix: a US week, an Australian week, a Canadian week, a Luxembourg week, separate UK campaigns run independently by different companies, and condition-specific months like endometriosis, PMOS (PCOS), and ovarian cancer awareness. All separate. None coordinated. Nothing that ties it together globally.

So… why not a global Women’s Health Awareness Week?

Want to add your voice? Grab a sign, snap a photo, and tell us why this matters to you. Comment below or send us your photo to be featured (herhealthdigest@gmail.com). Everyone welcome!

It's LIVE!!

Nila just dropped on Android, and I'm doing a happy dance.

This is the app I needed — and still need — for my perimenopause-to-surgical-menopause chaos era. Now it exists. Now it's yours too.

Trustworthy research. Private tracking. Recipes, workouts, breathwork. 80+ symptom guides, including relief. A growing practitioner directory that gets it. A community that shows up at 2am, when nobody else does.

Everyone needs a Nila. Now everyone can have one.

Fierce Healthcare wrote about Nila this week, the project I’ve been building since my own endometriosis and breast cancer treatment pushed me into acute menopause.

I started by indexing research just to understand what was happening to my own body. Along the way I kept hitting gaps: almost nothing for people with hormone-positive cancer, or who are neurodivergent, trans, non-binary, managing autoimmune disease. The existing menopause resources are great for some people. They just don’t cover everyone.

So I built something that tries to bridge that gap.

Why are so many women still struggling to find trusted menopause information?

Erin Beattie is the founder of Nila, a platform created to help women access reliable, evidence-based information about menopause and related health challenges.

Her work was inspired by her own experience navigating cancer treatment, surgical menopause, endometriosis, perimenopause, and ADHD, often relying on screenshots, notes, and repeated conversations just to keep track of information.

She believes one of the biggest problems in menopause care is not a lack of information, but the fact that it is often fragmented, difficult to understand, and hard to trust.

Her goal is to help women walk into appointments knowing which questions to ask, so they can spend less time searching for answers and more time accessing the support they need.
