Three Days of (Re)Casting the Canon ✍🏾

Three days of reading, writing, questioning, and unlearning.

I had the privilege of participating in the G.A.S. Critical Writing Workshop, where we explored how histories and canons are constructed, whose voices get represented, and how we can rethink the narratives surrounding African art and culture.

From engaging with texts and case studies to sharing ideas, writing, and learning alongside fellow writers and researchers, every session challenged me to think—and write—more critically.

I leave with new questions, new perspectives, meaningful connections, and a renewed commitment to writing with intention.

Grateful for the experience. 🤎

Who gets to write the canon? 👀

Day 1 at the Gas Foundation: 7 writers, 3 eras of Nigerian art, 1 big question —what happens when we tell our own stories?

(Re)Casting the Canon rethinks the canon of African modern art from the inside out.

We dug into modernist, contemporary, and ancient Nigerian art history — not just to look back, but to ask: how do we contribute to the canon, and what does it look like to rewrite it? 🇳🇬✍🏾

This is just the beginning. 🔁 More to come.

We are pleased to announce the second cohort of the G.A.S. Critical Writing Workshop. Following a successful pilot edition, held in March 2026, the workshop continues to support the professional and critical development of emerging art writers, researchers, and cultural practitioners in Nigeria.

The seven participants are Azeezat Azeez Adeola, Chibuzo Emmanuel (@chibuzocartz), Emmanuella Jossy (@ellejossy), Emmanuella Nwachukwu (@emmah_ebube), Ifeanyi Ogbo (@ifeanyi_awesome), Mustapha Enesi (@musttie_enesi), and Timothy Bolarinwa (@hellotimmmy).

They were selected by Folasade Ologundudu (@sadeolo), current G.A.S. resident and recipient of the G.A.S. Fellowship Award 2026, who will also facilitate the workshop.

Over three days at G.A.S. Lagos, the cohort will engage in workshops, readings, lectures, and discussions exploring Nigerian and Black artists within and beyond the Eurocentric art-historical canon. Through archival texts, roundtables, screenings, and presentations on Black liberatory thinkers, alongside guided writing prompts and peer feedback, participants will develop a critical essay for consideration for publication.

The G.A.S. Critical Writing Workshop is made possible through the generous support of Deutsche Bank (@deutschebankart).

@lemighariokwu spoke deeply about culture, told us about history and things we genz don’t even know😅 but tell me how this young looking man is over 70😅 I admire your stature and your passion sir.

@irenettya with the use of various case studies of celebrities, she explained style, relationship, personality and culture-all of which she stands for.

Listened to CEO of @beautyhutafrica Subuola Oyelele where she explained the state of international market and products in Nigeria.
