Akitsuna Komori “NAVAGRAHA” | HENKYO Although the pictorial field contains motifs charged with abundant symbolic meaning, the work is never subsumed into a fixed narrative of religious iconography or spiritualism. Rather, through an exceptionally refined compositional sensibility that governs the entire pictorial field, together with a distinctly contemporary sophistication, these symbols are absorbed into the work not as elements that insist upon their meanings, but as presences endowed with a restrained and balanced abstraction. Ordinarily, such symbols would carry a strong semantic force and demand a particular interpretation from the viewer. In this work, however, that symbolic pressure itself is transformed into a quiet, centripetal force. The French cultural anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss described the Western conception of the self as “centrifugal,” and, in contrast, the Japanese conception as “centripetal.” Whereas in the West the self tends to position itself as the point of departure from which it moves outward toward the world, in Japan the self emerges through its relations with the external world, incorporating them and taking form as a result of those relations. Japonisme often embraced Japanese beauty primarily at the level of form. Yet beyond those forms lies this deeper structure of thought and sensibility, which may gradually begin to attract greater attention. When that happens, I cannot help but feel that the position occupied by Akitsuna Komori as an artist will emerge as one of its important points of reference. ————————————————————— Akitsuna Komori 小森紀綱 “NAVAGRAHA” 26 Sept - 24 Oct, 2026 #akitsunakomori #henkyo #japaneseartist
