NWA — Introducing the Certina DS PH500.

Five years ago, when this watch was re-launched, it immediately landed on my radar. The design spoke to me, and that orange dial had me hooked. But then my beloved Doxa SUB arrived, effectively putting an end to my search for an orange diver. For a while, the hunger subsided.

Until yesterday.

Somehow, five years after first wanting one, an orange PH500 appeared for sale literally on my street. At that point, resistance felt somewhat pointless.

The PH500 draws on Certina’s long history of making robust dive watches, taking its name from the original DS PH500M — a 1960s professional diver developed for serious underwater use and famously used during the 1968 Tektite experiment. The modern interpretation carries much of that same tool-watch spirit: 500 metres of water resistance, a substantial case, and, in this case, an unapologetically orange dial.

I wish Certina received more recognition for watches like this. Outside of the collecting world, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who has even heard of the brand. Yet dig a little deeper and there’s a fascinating history of innovation, durability and some genuinely interesting watches.

The outside world might not know much about Certina.

But after five years, this particular one managed to blip across my radar just one more time.

And this time, I was standing right next to it.

Welcome to the collection, Certina PH500.

Not for any particular reason. I just feel like I don't post it enough, especially given how great of a watch it is!

What’s your favourite “weird” watch?

After recently writing about the boringly beautiful Sinn 556 and its extreme German efficiency, I decided to make a complete U-turn and spend a few days with the frankly bonkers Doxa SUB 300T.

And I loved it.

As my watch collection has grown, so has my interest in design, function, history, and innovation. But my idea of what makes a watch interesting has shifted, too.

Instagram has a habit of telling us which watches we need to own: the latest hype piece, the essential reference, or the collection checklist — insert chronograph and dress watch here. But I’m increasingly happy that the watches I’ve bought have been chosen simply because I enjoy them.

I’m definitely drawn to the unusual. My recent acquisition of a 1000-metre, 49mm, all-black titanium Seiko Tuna is probably evidence enough. The Doxa SUB 300T, especially in its unmistakable Professional orange, only reinforces the point.

The cushion-shaped case. The tiny, almost comical dial. The chunky hands. The oddly proportioned bezel. None of it should really work together — and yet somehow, it does. For me.

It doesn’t look like a watch designed to appeal to everyone. It looks like a purpose-built instrument that somehow evolved into an icon.

The SUB 300T has never tried to be elegant, slim, or conventionally handsome. It has character. It has history. It has a clear sense of purpose. Most importantly, it’s fun.

That feels worth remembering in a hobby increasingly shaped by hype, algorithms, and imaginary checklists. Your watches don’t need to make sense to anyone else. They just need to make you happy when you put them on.

So, do you have an ugly duckling? A watch that makes no sense on paper but works perfectly for you? Or is your collection strictly black dials and steel bracelets?
