Carl Vine's Sawtooth was commissioned in 2023 by the Nexas Quartet with the generous support of patrons Carmen Jarrett and Kathie and Reg Grinberg.

The title refers to the sawtooth waveform a shape associated with the sound wave produced by a saxophone. Vine uses this as a conceptual starting point for exploring the instrument's contrasting qualities: smoothness and roughness, fluidity and sharpness, lyricism and aggression.

The world premiere took place on 10 November 2023 at The Neilson, ACO Pier 2/3, in Sydney. The quartet have performed the work numerous times in Australia and significantly at the World Saxophone Congress in Harbin China in 2025.
