Phew 😮‍💨

Yesterday was a good day for the HEAT WAVE campaign! We are officially at $766 raised towards our goal.

Do we think we could get to $1,000 by the end of today? 👀 If 47 people gave $5 in the spirit of Gallery5 we could reach that number!

At a time when the world is daunting, the arts keep us connected. Organizations like Gallery5 are the lifeblood of the creative community at the grass roots level, serving as a launch pad for local artists and acting as a catalyst for resiliency. This space continues to exist because a whole lot of people put in the time, sweat, and passion to keep it going. Gallery5 is a special place, and if you want to show your support this summer, please consider a donation in an amount that is meaningful to you. Every bit helps us overcome the strain of our slow season, helping to support operating costs to allow free community programming to thrive.

A personal story from @mymusicmary to close out #mentalhealthawarenessmonth. 🩵

After having her first baby, Mary found herself in the thick of postpartum depression; exhausted, disconnected, and searching for something to hold onto. That something turned out to be a ukulele.

Music was a lifeline… and eventually, its impact shaped the way Mary showed up for her students too.

That’s the heart of what we do at My Music Starts Here. When educators experience music as a tool for their own regulation and healing, it transforms how they bring it into the classroom.

The ukulele is approachable, portable, and immediately usable, with your students and with yourself, providing:

🎵 Emotional regulation
🎵 Presence and connection
🎵 A community built around music

Your story might look a lot like Mary’s. 🩵 Pop a heart in the comments if so - we all need more reminders that we’re not alone!

✨ In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re giving away a Kala Ukulele Starter Kit — Soprano Ukulele, Online Lessons, Quick Start Guide, Kala App, Clip-on Tuner, and Tote Bag. To enter: follow both @kalabrandmusic and @mymusicstartshere and comment on any of our #mentalhealthawarenessmonth posts.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (@lewisginter) opens its newest permanent exhibit this Saturday, and we got an early look.

Butterflies Bloom debuts May 23 inside the Subtropical wing of the Conservatory, a stunning structure crowned by a 63-foot-tall dome and home to four distinct climate zones: Desert, Mediterranean, Tropical, and Subtropical.

The experience exceeded every expectation. The space feels genuinely lush and immersive: warm, tropical, alive. Free-flying butterflies move through the air around you, feeding and taking flight while you explore their origins, habitats, and life cycles.

And Butterflies Bloom is just one piece of a much larger opening. Starting May 23, Lewis Ginter unveils 7.5 acres of new gardens, sweeping meadows, new lakeside views, and breathtaking new spaces.

Conservatory garden design by Jayton Howard, Claire Reines, and Catalina LaFrance.

The exhibit is permanent, meaning you can visit any time of year. Admission is included with a regular Garden ticket, and members get in free. Timed reservations are required and run every 15 minutes. Walk-ins are welcome based on availability, but booking ahead is the move.

🐾 This week, we’re excited to welcome Tamsen Kingry, CEO of the @richmondspca, as guest editor for Richmond Grid’s partner publication, @here.weekly, where local community builders share their favorite ways to explore and celebrate Richmond.

Tamsen has spent more than two decades helping shape one of Richmond’s most beloved nonprofit organizations, guiding the Richmond SPCA through continued growth while expanding programs that support pets and the people who love them across the region.

What began as an internship during her senior year at VCU turned into a 24-year career rooted in compassion, community, and connection. Since joining the Richmond SPCA full-time in 2002, Tamsen has worked across communications, development, and operations before becoming CEO in 2019. Along the way, she has adopted three dogs and two cats, fostered many others, and helped countless friends find new companions of their own.

This week, Tamsen shares some of her favorite ways to experience the city, including Bark in the Park with @gosquirrels and @carmaxpark, kayaking out to @sharpsislandrva, scenic walks through @hollywoodcem, and History Hound tours with adoptable dogs and @thevalentinerva.

She also spotlights the Richmond SPCA’s Amazing Tails Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, May 30. This Amazing Race-inspired adventure through Carytown will be filled with clues, teamwork, local businesses, and community fun, all supporting the Richmond SPCA’s lifesaving mission.

This week, our partner publication @here.weekly is featuring guest editor Brit Trible, owner of @gildedlilydesign, a Richmond-based container gardening and holiday arrangements business known for elevating homes and businesses across the region.

Brit (@bpgtrible) grew up on a horse farm just outside the city, and from an early age, she always had her hands (and feet) in the dirt. If you ask us, there’s just something about the beauty of the outdoors that stays with you and shapes how you see the world.

But Brit didn’t begin her career designing outdoor spaces. After earning a Master’s in Occupational Therapy from James Madison University, she spent 15 years working in geriatric rehabilitation across hospital systems, home health, and rehab centers.

During COVID, after having her third child, she felt a pull toward something more creative. The shift wasn’t just about artistry, it was about connection. She wanted to build relationships while creating something tangible and lasting. That’s when Gilded Lily Designs was born.

Today, her business has adorned nearly 200 homes and businesses from Richmond to Charlottesville with custom container gardens and seasonal plantings. Brit sources planters and designs each space to match the style and scale of the property. She’s drawn to both sides of the work, the creative process and the relationships that come with it.

When she’s not growing her business, Brit enjoys exploring Richmond and beyond with her husband, Paul, and their three children. This week, she’s joining us at Here Weekly to share her favorite ways to celebrate the place we all love to call home.

Here subscribers, make sure to check your inbox for Brit’s issue of #hereweekly where she recommends @richmondsymphonyleague Designer Show House, the inaugural Fan Flea Market, Richmond Restaurant Week supporting @feedmoreinc, and Historic Garden Week

With Hack for RVA (@rvahacks) set to kick off tomorrow, we’re featuring an OpEd by Ford Prior on our site today. As the organizer of Richmond’s first civic hackathon (March 27–29 at VCU), Ford (@rvaford) and a crew of volunteers are calling all technologists, designers, and community members to roll up their sleeves and build real solutions together for the city’s biggest challenges.

Ford shares that things may feel like they’re on fire both at home and abroad, but now isn’t the time for cynicism. “We can still get together on a Friday and fix a broken thing. That’s why we created Hack for RVA, a collaborative, volunteer-run initiative dedicated to civic innovation,” says Ford.

Unlike blue sky “performative innovation,” Ford points out that this civic hackathon is firmly rooted in Mayor @dannyavula’s 7-pillar Mayoral Action Plan (MAP). For each pillar, Hack for RVA has formed a committee of City Hall stakeholders, nonprofit subject matter experts, and a few well-known entrepreneurs to define fine-grained problem statements and associated data.

At tomorrow’s kick-off, teams will select a pillar and get one hour to interview each committee before they begin hacking. Demos are due Saturday night, with over $10k in awards the following day.

Registration costs $10 and includes a backpack, t-shirt, 3 meals, and lots of powerful tech to use for free. You can bring a team, show up solo and hack alone in your hoodie, or get paired with a team that needs your skillset. A team of tech and design mentors will be onsite all weekend long to help you get unstuck. This is not an event for techies only.

“The goal is not a flashy demo but a functioning flywheel,” says Ford. “We’re kind of doing a new thing. 2-stroke engines are great, but what we’re building might look like a 4-stroke racecar by the end of 2026. Come build that racecar with us, starting this weekend.”

For more, follow @rvahacks, visit rvahacks.org, and check the link in our bio for Ford’s OpEd.
