Hey Hull! #CommonGroundSpokenWord is coming to you for a one night special! I’m excited!

Massive thanks to the wonderful people that is @spati_bar for hosting us in a few weeks, Monday 24th August. Get the date in your diary eh.

My good friend @hey.ray.shipley is travelling all the way to Hull from Aotearoa New Zealand for it (ok not totally true but also not sooo far off the truth 🚀) and we’ll be joined by Hull’s king of word-wielding general tomfoolery the one and only @russ.litten

The format of these nights is an open mic where YOU get to share your work on the mic first, (after a bit of mania from me) and we all get to listen. There’s a sign up sheet which’ll go out around 6.30pm that night and once it’s full it’s full so get there in good time if you don’t want to be disappointed. Only one piece each please. If there’s a low take up you can always bring a back up but I like to give everyone a chance to have their go in the time limit.
Second half is the featureds. Since I’m not home much I’ve put myself in there as it seemed rude not to.

I have no idea how busy we’ll get but would love to see you there! There’s a little garden at the back and also some space out front if things end up feeling crowded.

Tasty selection of german style beers and also some very nice 0% offerings if you’re off the booze like me.

Scroll for more detailed info. £5 entry more as a donation suggestion than anything. Cash welcome on the door, I’ll put the Common Ground bank account on there also. All proceeds split directly between the acts.

Let’s have a great little Monday night sharing work, words, thoughts, offerings. Some of it will@be excellent. Some of it will be loveable trash. Who cares! Warmth, lols, truth etc is Common Ground’s jam. Express yourself.

Looking forward to hearing and hosting you.

Hester x (& @spati_bar )

We’re happy to announce the return of our Week of Port Noise Arts Events.

In the lead up to our main event, we’re presenting a short programme of collaborative arts events across Ōhinehou. This includes a variety show led by Delaney Davidson, an atmospheric taonga puoro performance by Noa Records, and a trans-Tasman music gathering with Our Carlson and Sweet Whirl. The programme also features a local pop-up exhibition and a poetry and live sound collaboration with Dominic Hoey, Ben Brown, Rebecca Nash, and many more.

These events offer different ways in to Port Noise. Some are intimate, some are immersive full of drama, some are more social. You might find yourself listening closely, sitting with sound for longer than expected, or sharing a room with people you’ll later spot down by the main stage.

All of these events offer a different way in to Port Noise. Some are intimate and concise - with powerful subtlety, some are bolshy and full of showmanship and bright lights, others are casual and feel like a big social arena, fuelled by community. It’s a chance to ease into the frequency rather than dropping straight into the deep end of all our festival can be.

Think of it as the long introduction to Port Noise. A soft opening, a side path, a quieter door into the same world. Dip a toe before taking the whole plunge.

Details and tickets are available via Humanitix.

A few days away from starting rehearsals for another show @hulltruck I’ve been reminding myself of my entry into the world of writing music for theatre. ‘Paragon Dreams’ was a dark, Lynchian one-woman show written/performed by @hestermaryida I had no idea how to write music for theatre and knew nothing about the process of making theatre but with the patience and encouragement of Hetty and Dir. Mark Babych I managed to write some stuff I’m deeply proud of. 5 years on and I feel like I’m getting the hang of the unexpected career path. Working with new creatives and discovering new ways to work with music is always buzz. Here’s to many more…
