Wellness and breast health screening day at JAG Method in Johannesburg. 27 women screened and 1 lady has been sent to radiology for further diagnosis. JAG recently lost Christina to breast cancer. This wellness day was in her honour. Thank you to @swimbiketene for heading up our screening service in Johannesburg. Proud to have you on our team. #earlydetectionsaveslives

Hey there! My name is Martene Esteves.

I started my fitness journey in 2016 and have completed many awesome events along the way. One of my highlights was finishing my first Half Ironman in Portugal, Cascais, in 2022.

This year has been a little up and down with some minor injuries, but despite that, I managed my half marathon PB at Two Oceans this year 😅

I am privileged to be a runner and am grateful that I am able to move my body to keep fit! I have a wonderful group of runners that I surround myself with: my mom, my partner, and her best friend. We thoroughly enjoy the traditional Sunday Runday and the post run breakfast, too!

I’m looking forward to my next planned race, which is Joburg’s fastest 10km at Pirates in September, hoping to finally break a sub 1 hour 10km 🤩

Haven’t been feeling well in the week, glad I managed to go out and run 🏃🏽‍♀️

Great morning out at @discovery_sa @vitalitysa_ Rockies road race.

Beautiful morning with my @peak_team @peak_team_ac fam and seeing everyone on the road. Well done to all the runners.

That race you’ve been training for is done, you’ve made it 🙌🎉🏅

Now what?….the urge might be to splurge on fast foods, cakes & sweets, copious alcoholic drinks….but remember that your body is in a catabolic (breakdown) state post-race and that at some stage you will be expecting to return to training for your next athletic adventure.

So have a glass (or two) or champagne and a few sweet treats (yes you’ve burnt lots of calories) but be sure you include lots of healthy food too 🥦🌶🍠🥬🌶🍒🥑🫐🥥

Post-race recovery MUST include:

1. PROTEIN- as soon as possible after your race and at regular intervals throughout the days for the week after racing make sure that you eat protein along with restoring your carbohydrate stores. Increase your protein intake by an extra portion per day. Remember that PROTEINS ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE BODY.
2. REST- sleep and lay off training (depending on the event duration). Start with some easy stretching, swimming or spinning your legs out on a stationary bike.
3. LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE- in the form of massage, gentle movement & breathing. If you have access to #normatec compression boots…use them!
4. EAT TO REDUCE INFLAMMATION- racing creates a lot of inflammation in the body, aim to reduce this with an anti inflammatory diet of berries, green veg, garlic, ginger, turmeric (taken in capsule form is as good as a pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory). Limit fried foods, sugar & dairy which increase inflammation. Ensure that you are adequately rehydrating as well 💦

Including these steps will mean that you will reduce your risk of injury, recover faster and comeback even stronger 💪
