I think it’s important to immerse yourself in the local culture when you travel. Not just the things they market to you to incentivize you to come for the sake of tourism but the roots of the place you’re going to. We went on 2 AMAZING tours these last couple of days. First, we went on a tour of the famous Bazurto market where they literally sell everything. We were able to learn about the music of the people of Cartagena, the history of the area, and sit down and eat at a local market eatery. Today, we visited Palenge which is the first freedom city in all of the Americas and home to descendants of Western and Central African slaves (yes, DR Congo as well). Their language is a mixture of Spanish, Portuguese, and Kikongo. We learned tons about the city, visited a local prayer/healing woman, played drums, visited the medicine man, learned how the ancestors of the Palenge people built homes, and ate at the best restaurant in town. Thank you @beyondthewallctg & @travelpalenque for an amazing time! Ata uto begà (which means see you later in the Palenge language).
