There are good penalties and bad penalties… and sometimes, taking one is the smartest play you can make.

In this case, the defender had no option but to commit the penalty to stop a clear scoring chance. That’s what we call a good penalty — sacrificing a minor to prevent a guaranteed goal.

But here’s the bigger lesson 👇

How you communicate with officials matters.

You can question a call… but not every call.

If you argue everything, refs stop listening. It’s the classic “boy who cried wolf” effect — when a real 50/50 call happens, your voice won’t carry any weight.

Refs are human. They feel the pressure, the momentum, and the energy of the game just like everyone else.

👉 The key:
Pick your battles.

- If it’s obvious → accept it, skate to the box
- If it’s close → that’s when you speak up
- Stay composed, stay respectful

Over time, that earns credibility… and credibility can influence future calls.

Smart players don’t just play the game — they understand how to manage it. 💡

🏒 Coaches & Refs: Building Trust Together 🤝

It happens at every level—from single A to AAA. Sometimes coaches get so caught up in the moment that they start calling the game from the bench: “Offside!” “Icing!” “Too many men!”

From a referee’s perspective, this creates a no-win situation. If we don’t call it, we’re “missing” something. If we do call it, it looks like we’re biased. Either way, the kids on the ice end up with a scapegoat—and that’s not fair to them.

The solution? Trust and respect. 💯 Coaches should be calm, professional, and the voice of reason for their team. When coaches and refs work together, the game flows better, emotions stay in check, and the focus remains where it belongs: on the players learning, competing, and having fun.

If a ref loses the coach, they can lose control of the game. But when both sides respect each other, everyone wins. 🐼⚡️
