A huge highlight of my year has been bringing to life new programs that I believe in with people I respect. I’m super proud to have run two, successful mentorship-based climbing programs for women and non-binary folks this past summer! Shoutout to the best collaborators @bennettrahn @goatsonropes and @alpine_cowgirl!!

I truly believe that season-long programs make space for a deeper commitment to the learning process that pays off. Maybe it’s my background as an outdoor educator and youth coach, but I also love the relationships that form over the course of a season or year of climbing together.

There are a TON of benefits to a longer-format course:

✨ Repetition of skills
✨ Individualized coaching
✨ Diverse problem solving
✨ Stronger partnerships
✨ Connection to land

My name is Leigh and I am a late bloomer with a lot of stoke. Thank you @talkchalkytome for getting in touch and giving me a forum to share my story!

Having started climbing relatively late in life, sometimes I feel like I am on a ticking clock, trying to make up for lost time. I really enjoy it all, but I've realized I will happily spend all day climbing something/anything if the company is good.

So, it’s fair to say that the biggest impact from climbing is community. I am immensely grateful for the people I have been lucky to connect with. They continually inspire and motivate me, and are so much of the reason for my continual enthusiasm.

The deeper I’ve invested in my climbing journey, the more I’ve found the exact people I want to surround myself with. Climbers who share the excitement, who’ve cheered me on but also held me accountable so that I work on the things I say I want to improve. Coaches, guides, instructors and mentors who’ve all contributed to the climber and person I want to be, and have evolved into. Friends/partners you trust your life with, sharing laughs on an adventurous multi pitch or spotters you trust your ankles with on a lowball in the forest.

My story is as much as about them as it is about me, so they’re here with me in this post as they are on the rock. I’m forever grateful they’re in my life!

July’s @sherockspnw at @vw_north was a cracker, with plenty of try hard on ropes and some team sends on boulders.

What a fun night at @vw_north with new co-hosts @hikingleigh and @chelseycorliss! Thanks to all the crushers who came.

It was so awesome to see new friends hold hands and lean on each other to get up the partner climb, with the rest of the group cheering them on.

We even snuck in some bouldering at the end. Sharing beta even helped Leigh unlock a problem she was stuck on!

2023 recap pt 2. I’m celebrating all the hard things I got to try this year.

Cheers to adding to my toolbox, cheers to climbing scared and confidently (sometimes feeling both at the same time) and cheers to daring to make big moves.

When I was younger, being called a “try hard” was quite the insult. You didn’t want to be appear to try too hard. Now it’s the opposite.

The people whose opinion I value most, they respect the try hard. And I want to earn that respect. To be the kind of person that cares greatly and puts the effort in to show it.

Maybe it’s too earnest and a little cringe but I turned 45 yesterday, and I don’t care.

So cheers to run and jumps, deadpoints and compression dynos. Cheers to pulling hard and reaching full extensions. Cheers to matching feet, smearing, high steps and step throughs. Cheers to fist jams, drop knees and lock offs. Cheers to multipitch rope management, board- and crack climbing!

This video represents the hundreds of hours I’ve put in this year to learn all of the above.

Bonus thanks to Sam @vw_north, @modusathletica, @andrewhou_time & @goatsonropes for teaching me nearly all of these skills.

One year of yeeting myself off walls, of sideway swings, foot pops and cheese graters, practice whips and real whips, letting go and sliding down, “I can’t hold on” and “I don’t know where to go lol”.

I loved every single minute of it. It went hand in hand with progress and trying hard, and making myself vulnerable. Thanks to my all my friends for the belays, the soft catches and the spots.

Not captured, me kicking Sam in the head on a lead fall, me slipping on the 2nd pitch at Smith Rock, my body breaking down on the 3 mile approach in and not even getting to do the alpine multipitch I was there for.

What was your most memorable fall of the year? Mine was a hard landing at VW North when I face planted. My hip hasn’t been right since!
