Partial solar eclipse over Schafberg, Austria – 12 August 2026 🌒

Almost 90 % of the sun swallowed by the moon, right at sunset. Austria’s strongest eclipse since 1999 – and the next total one here won’t come until 2081.

We watched the crescent sink into the haze layers above the Salzkammergut lakes, and honestly: no simulation prepares you for that colour. Burning orange, razor-thin cusps, clouds catching fire around it.

Shared with three of crazy guys up here – @hinneu @alessio_silv @_thomas.dachs 😂 So much laughter, so much waiting, and then those 45 minutes that made all of it worth it.

And the night isn’t over: Perseids and the Milky Way are still ahead of us. 🌌

Huge thanks to @5schaetze for taking us up the mountain.

This image was never a coincidence.

Days before this photograph was taken, I was already planning every detail: the Milky Way’s position, weather forecasts, moon phases, and the perfect composition at Staller Sattel, one of the most breathtaking dark-sky locations in the Alps, directly on the border between East Tyrol, Austria, and South Tyrol, Italy.

From Saturday to Sunday, I spent the night under the open sky, sleeping on an inflatable mattress surrounded by alpine peaks and complete silence. No tent. No roof. Just nature, darkness, and billions of stars above.

While most people were asleep, I was waiting for a moment I had envisioned long before arriving.

For 2.5 hours, the Benro Astro Polaris tracked the night sky, collecting the faint light of the Milky Way as it rose above the mountains. Standing beneath it was this solitary tree, shaped by decades of wind, snow, and storms — a silent witness to countless nights under the stars.

Yet the greatest highlight of this adventure wasn’t the image itself.

It was the people.

Between cameras, astrophotography, and conversations beneath one of Europe’s darkest skies, I had the pleasure of meeting two genuinely great guys. Photography creates images, but nights like this create memories.

Thank you, @hinneu and @pippo.krg for an unforgettable night under the Milky Way.
