Summer 2025 photo dump

Ever since I started teaching, I've developed this pressure to fill up 3 months of summertime. As a part-time lecturer, not working/making money for a long period of time gives me huge anxiety. But it's also a good time for me to travel and build my career as an artist so I apply for a bunch of residencies a year ahead. Unfortunately all of my applications got rejected and there was no place to go. In the worst case, I was self-deprecating myself as a loser.

But in retrospect, I'm glad that I didn't get into anything. It gave me so much time to be creative, collaborate with people I've admired, and enjoy the summer heat with my beloved friends. Worked on 3 different projects: t-shirt making with @njwaguespack support, a collaborative performance with my queer Korean fam @youngjoonkwak @youngsunart, and an installation work which is coming up in December. So grateful for people whom I got connected with through these projects!!

I guess there is always a way! But ngl, would love to go somewhere next summer 😂 ok time to get ready for my classes ✨

The late Thomas Kong turned his Rogers Park convenience store into an urban art environment—making collage art from packaging, leaves, and everyday scrap.

SAIC alum and curator S.Y. Lim (BFA 2017) collaborated closely with Kong in his final years. With his blessing, Lim preserves Kong's legacy by archiving thousands of works and organizing exhibitions that bring his art beyond the walls of his store. Read the full story at the link in bio.

How To See In The Dark — a group exhibition I co-organized with @diagrammatic.media and @solutionsforpostmodernliving as part of @ccam_chicago at @coprosperitychicago in May/June 2025. A workshop, symposium, an evening of performances, and printed matter were all part of this @foundationforcontemporaryarts supported exhibition.

The exhibition is guided by Heinz von Foerster’s idea that “if you want to see, learn how to act.” In this sense, the show urges viewers to embrace discomfort, challenge inherited beliefs, and resist closed systems of thought. Ultimately, the exhibition proposes a form of revolutionary optimism rooted in a cyber-ecological spirituality, calling for collective, intergenerational engagement with darkness—not to escape it, but to learn how to live, think, and act within it.

It’s my first project with Center for Concrete and Abstract Machines as board president. 🌱 Gratitude for @diagrammatic.media whose ideas and visions were the catalyst for the entire project. Congrats to all, what an honor to collaborate with you and collectively birth enchantment within ourselves, and with each other. May the work continue…an exhibition catalog with an essay by Brian Holmes of @watershed.art.and.ecology is coming out this fall!⚡️🖤

This time last weekend ish, I was in Milwaukee on behalf of @blackcube.museum for a BINGO MIXER!!! @ruthfoundationforthearts!!! With @blackpaintersacademy !!! It was incredible and so thrilling to be in a space with so many artists of color, new brilliant faces and some old real friends! really wonderful work by Azikiwe Mohammed, (also the conductor of bingo!) the snacks were great! 😊 I love snacks at events ✨#milwaukee #ruthkohler #arts #midwest #bingo #installation #artistssupportingartists #connections #friends

A sincere thank you to Ed, Chenée, and S.Y. for joining me in houston for the installation of Charlatan, Slightly Muffled (2025), Relatively Submerged (2025), and Summons, (2024). Together, these three works become "Somewhat Muzzled", my contribution to "What drawing can be: four responses" at the Menil Drawing Institute curated by Edouard Kopp, John R. Eckel, Jr. Foundation Chief Curator, Menil Drawing Institute, and Kelly Montana, Associate Curator, Menil Drawing Institute.

I also wanted to extend gratitude to the staff at the Menil Drawing Institute: Eduoard and Kelly, Kent, Catherine, Sirena, Patrick, Joy, Constance, and so many more- it was an incredible experience to work alongside you!

To the artists: Jillian, Teresita, and Constantin, it was an absolute pleasure getting to know you, and I'm very proud to have my drawings near all of yours.
