Week Without Driving! You might not have heard of it, but it’s a challenge put to everyone to experience what it’s like to be someone who isn’t able to drive. The Week Without Driving is a challenge to go about life, without driving! It sounds simple in theory and for many, it is! However, there are some challenges for many as well. The Week Without Driving is to raise awareness to the actual lived experience of non-drivers as well as to promote how great car-lite alternatives can be for some uses! Many in our communities, whether they be keiki, kupuna, or disabled individuals, do not have the luxury of being able to drive wherever they want to, and we should advocate for public services that considers their needs! By putting yourselves in their shoes you take the step of understanding what it’s like to be someone who can’t drive and can better relate to the experiences (positive and negative) of the many commuters in Hawaii that can’t drive. If you want to contact your local representative about prioritizing the needs of non-drivers or to simply express other concerns, reach out to us via DM’s or at oahutransitriders@gmail.com! We are more than happy to direct you to the appropriate resources available and if possible, help you push forward transit or walkability concerns in your community!

Can you go a week without driving?🚶🏽‍♀️🚲🚌 During the week of October 1st, we’re asking you to give it a try. For many people, going without a car isn't a choice. It's a daily reality. One in three people in the U.S. can’t drive due to age, disability, income and other factors. Instead, they rely on public transit, carpooling, walking, biking, and rolling. This Week Without Driving is an opportunity to reflect on the transportation challenges our neighbors face and explore how complete streets make getting around Oʻahu safer and easier for everyone. Leave the keys at home, try a new way to travel, and join the movement toward a more accessible and resilient Hawaiʻi. 🌺🤙🏽 #WeekWithoutDriving2026 #HonoluluCompleteStreets

We had a very busy week with our partners from the @federaltransitadministration (FTA) showcasing some of our transportation priorities and the work underway across Oʻahu. Our guests visited #HNLSkyline to see firsthand how the first fully automated rail transit system in the United States is connecting communities and providing new transportation options for those who rely on it. We also attended the @hawaiidot 2026 Transportation Summit together, sharing ideas and learning from transportation leaders from across the country. Our federal partners also toured our Joint Traffic Management Center (JTMC) on Alapaʻi, where City, State and other partner agencies work together under one roof to coordinate emergency response, traffic management and communications for residents and visitors across Oʻahu. Mahalo to our partners at the FTA for visiting our City operations and learning more about the federally funded projects helping shape Oʻahu’s transportation system. #HOLOWithUs

Today, September 22, is #WorldCarFreeDay! Car Free Day encourages motorists around the world to give up their vehicles for a day, and aims to see what life would be like without cars on the road. We understand that a lot of people rely on their personal vehicles to get around. However, we want to observe today as another way for you to get around and try out a new mode of transportation! Whether it's using #TheBus, #HNLSkyline, riding a bike or @gobikihi, or simply just walking, you might discover your new favorite way to get to where you need to be! Try to go car free today or tomorrow, or next week, or next month. Maybe once a week or twice a month! Just try it, and see the benefits of not having to sit behind the wheel of your car. #HOLOWithUs

ETC Institute is on the ground in Honolulu! Our team is talking with TheBus and Skyline riders as part of a large-scale origin-destination survey, on behalf of the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services. We are interviewing riders in person, gathering current demographic and travel profile data. This baseline will support comparisons of rider experience across past and future transit networks. This project will collect 15,000 responses to support ongoing #transitplanning efforts across the region. Thank you to everyone on our ETC field and project teams for their hard work, helping guide what’s next for Honolulu!
