The Manu o Kū, also known as the White Fairy Tern, found near Oʻahu's south shore, has a huge influence on our newest transit system: Skyline.

See our Deputy Director Jon Nouchi talk about the history of how the Skyline name came to be, and how the Manu o Kū influenced that decision and future branding of the system.

Can you all believe it's been one year!?

We're proud to mark one year of operations for Skyline Segment 2, a major milestone year marked by significant accomplishments for the nation’s first fully automated, elevated rail transit system.

One year ago on October 16, 2025, Skyline Segment 2 opened its doors for passengers, adding four new stations and five additional miles of service. The expansion strengthened connections to major employment centers and destinations, including Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Māpunapuna, and the Kalihi Transit Center at Middle Street. Since then, the system has provided over 6 million rides through its 13 stations, connecting East Kapolei and Kalihi while improving access to jobs, schools, businesses, and key destinations across the island.

Following the opening of Segment 2, support for Skyline has grown tremendously, along with ridership, now averaging nearly 13,500 weekday rides and maintaining more than 99% in service reliability.

Additionally, Skyline recorded its highest ridership to date on both a weekday and a weekend in recent months. Weekday ridership reached a record 14,143 rides on August 26, while weekend ridership peaked at 14,192 rides on September 12 during Megabon.

Skyline’s achievements have also earned national recognition, with the system receiving the 2026 American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Innovation Award. The award recognizes Skyline’s innovative use of technology to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation.

The success of Skyline has been driven by growing ridership, expanded service, and consistently reliable operations. As the system continues to grow, it will provide even greater mobility while supporting housing, economic development, and a more sustainable future for O‘ahu.

We will be conducting an annual Emergency Preparedness Exercise on the evening of Tuesday, October 13, 2026, into the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 14, 2026. This drill will involve City and County of Honolulu First Responders, including the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), Honolulu Fire Department (HFD), and Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS), among others.

The exercise will be taking place at the Keoneʻae UH West Oʻahu Skyline Station from 11:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. THERE WILL BE NO IMPACT TO SKYLINE OPERATIONS.

Skyline will operate for normal operations from 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on October 13 and 14.

This will also ensure that all agencies have the opportunity to evaluate their preparation capabilities and to enhance the safety and security of the Skyline system.

Residents and visitors should expect the following:

Increased activity and noise at the Keoneʻae UH West Oʻahu Skyline Station.

Road closures at Kualakaʻi Parkway and Hoʻomohala Avenue intersection; detour signage and traffic control will be in place to guide motorists.

This past weekend, Jon Nouchi, Director of Transit for DTS, accepted the aptly named Lambda Alpha International Skyline Award (not named after our Skyline project) on behalf of Mayor Rick Blangiardi during the society's annual Land Economics Gathering held in Waikīkī this year.

The LAI International Skyline Award is presented annually at Lambda Alpha International’s Fall Gathering and Land Economics Weekend to honor commendable projects, master plans, or regional policies that advance the practical application of land economics in the preservation, development, or stewardship of land resources.

#HNLSkyline represents one of the most ambitious transit-oriented development initiatives in the United States, transforming how future generations of Honolulu residents will live, work, and connect. Through sustained collaboration among the City & County of Honolulu, the State of Hawai'i, community stakeholders, and private partners, this effort is creating vibrant mixed-use neighborhoods, expanding affordable housing opportunities, and advancing a more resilient and connected island future. The Skyline Award recognizes this shared vision and extraordinary commitment to shaping a more sustainable Honolulu.

A little bit on LAI:

Lambda Alpha International (LAI) is an international honorary society dedicated to the field of land economics and the multidisciplinary study and stewardship of land. Founded in 1930 at Northwestern University, it serves as a non-political forum for senior professionals involved in urban planning, real estate development, land use law, municipal governance, architecture, civil engineering, transit, and economic research. Previous LAI Skyline Awards have honored Old Town Pasadena (California), Renaissance Square (Puerto Rico), Cira Centre/University City District (Pennsylvania), and CityCenterDC, Washington, D.C.

Representatives from the Department of Transportation Services will be there to share an update on planned sidewalk improvements, answer questions and hear directly from the community. @hnl.dts

And while sidewalks are the focus of the meeting, please feel free to bring questions or concerns about any other City issues in the neighborhood. I’d be glad to hear what’s on your mind. taken in Kaumakapili Church by @hnl.dts

At some point during the day, everyone is a pedestrian. Even when you drive, the second you step into the parking lot you become a pedestrian. However you travel, be alert, stay cautious, and watch out for each other. 🚸

Pedestrian safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let's work together to make Honolulu's streets safer! 🤙🏽🌺

On October 1, 2026, officers from District 8, District 1, and the Major Events Division conducted a joint operation in the ‘Ewa and Kapolei areas aimed at addressing illegal electric dirt bikes and improving traffic safety.

During the operation, officers seized three illegal electric dirt bikes, issued nine citations, and arrested two juveniles for driving without a license.
The Honolulu Police Department reminds the public that high-powered electric dirt bikes are prohibited from operating on public roadways.

Riders are encouraged to consider legal electric bicycles and other lawful transportation options.
