What a wonderful evening we had!

Our very first Wine Club Dinner was a success, and we couldn’t be happier.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and spent the evening in our company. It was a pleasure sharing good food, great conversation, and, of course, some exceptional wines.

A special thank you to @hoffmannandrathbone, @balfourwinery and @westwellwines for joining us and sharing the stories behind their wonderful wines.

We’re already looking forward to the next one…

@chapeldown @winkelstone & @CharlesPalmer will spend the evening with us.

**19th November **

See you there!

Harvest is in full swing across the vineyards of Kent and Sussex, which is as good an excuse as any to visit and drink some very good local wine.
We’re lucky to have some brilliant producers practically on our doorstep, and we like to champion some local drops on our list, such as Wayfarer Wines and Hoffman & Rathbone.

So if you’re heading out for a vineyard visit this autumn, stop by for lunch or dinner and make a proper day of it!

Bit of an English wine bonanza in Berkshire/Wiltshire yesterday...
A line-up of England's finest @kirbyhouseandgarden

Beforehand a visit to new player on the scene - @carvershill - where Tim Griffiths is making some very capable still Pinot+Precoce rosé and a generous Chardonnay from very ripe 2025 fruit, well supported by judicious new oak. Fizz to come shortly... definitely one to watch and a great space to visit, just a short ride from Newbury.

Charlie Astor and bottle of 1976 Kirby Rosé Table Wine (remained unopened, preserving the mystery 😁)

2016 @gusbourne_wine 51° North (tightly coiled, bristling with energy)
2015 @extonparkvineyard Cuvée M. Isaac BBB (aromatically ample and expressive of this very warm year, full of manucca honey, whilst palate is much racier)
2010 @nyetimber 1086 (sets a benchmark for balance)
2013 @hoffmannandrathbone Classic Cuvée (a few years bottle age has rounded the edges off this cooler, leaner vintage, whilst keeping its refreshing oyster shell salinity - my most pleasant surprise of the evening)
2014 @wistonestate Rosé (showing off all the quality of the vintage)
2021 @lymebaywine Martin's Lane Vineyard (my favourite English red currently)

Great sparkling wine isn’t just limited to Champagne!

The world of Sparkling wine has grown and England has been at the forefront of this revolution.

If you haven’t had an English sparkling wine before, then you need to keep on reading this and share it with a fellow bubblehead!

Semi-quietly, England has been entering the frame for the last decade+. It’s not easy to find the wines, but the quality is there.

Which is why I love the hunt so much and getting to experience bottles like the 2013 Hoffman and Rathbone Blanc de Blancs.

Hoffman and Rathbone hold back their Bubbles until they feel they are fully ready for the market. So a bottle like this 2013 is actually a current release! There is so much complexity as stone fruits and baked citrus notes combine beautifully with the pastry dough and toasty autolytic tones while still having a bit of almond paste and yellow florals to round it all out.

The Medium bodied feel is textured and balanced with tart, high acidity that has some bite but doesn’t overdo it.

I did have to go to Bath to find this. And specifically go to one of Bath’s best wine-centric restaurants. So there was a bit of the chase. But to sit down at Corkage, have a great meal, and drink this gorgeous wine was completely worth every bit of it!

If you’ve had any English sparkling wine, be sure to drop a ❤️ in the comments and let me know who some of your favorite producers are!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Hoffmann & Rathbone wine dinner hosted by winemaker Ulrich Hoffmann last week🍷✨

Guests, food, drink and the warm weather came together to create such a beautiful evening.

From the elegant Blanc de Blancs 2010 poured from magnums on arrival in our courtyard garden, to standout pours including the Classic Cuvée 2015, Pinot Noir NV5 and Rosé Reserve 2014, an exceptional line-up of English wines flowed.

Each was paired with Graham Garrett’s seasonal menu, with dishes including Marinated Orkney Scallop, elderflower ajo blanco, fermented gooseberry, and poached Kentish cherries with meadowsweet cake and yoghurt sorbet.

Thank you to Ulrich for sharing the stories behind every bottle, and to all our guests for making it such a memorable night. 🍾

2012 Rosé Reserve, Hoffmann & Rathbone
Sussex, England

The English Timekeeper

“This is not a rosé that hurries. After more than a decade resting quietly on its lees, the 2012 Rosé Reserve emerges with remarkable poise. Rose-gold in hue and shimmering with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is pure poetry: wild strawberry, ripe plum, and peach blossom layered with brioche, hazelnut, and a touch of ginger spice from its long maturation. On the palate, it’s vibrant yet luxuriously rounded with red cherry, fig, and citrus peel unfolding in elegant succession before a lingering, savoury finish. Complex, refined, and beautifully aged, it’s English sparkling wine at its most graceful.

A perfect choice when the evening calls for something rare, radiant, and quietly confident.
Pairs beautifully with smoked salmon, duck rillettes or simply good company and time.

Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Sussex Weald, Hoffmann & Rathbone is one of England’s most meticulous boutique sparkling producers. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Ulrich Hoffmann and Birgit Rathbone, the winery is built on a simple belief - that great sparkling wine cannot be rushed. Each vintage is crafted in tiny volumes, aged for extended periods on the lees to build texture, depth, and complexity.

The Pinot Noir grapes for this Rosé Reserve come from Ford Farm Vineyard in East Sussex, a warm, sheltered site with clay and sandstone soils that encourage concentration and elegance in the fruit. Sustainably farmed and naturally expressive, these vines deliver wines of precision and purity. The 2012 vintage, a classic cool-climate year, has matured into a wine of exquisite balance: English restraint wrapped in Champagne-level sophistication, with the hallmark Hoffmann & Rathbone patience shining through in every sip.”

What’s in the bottle?

What do you get if you mix six friends, six bottles of Sussex wine (and a guest from Kent), local cheese and charcuterie and a steamy summer evening?

An English wine extravaganza!

And what a line up it was, predominantly made up of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in very different forms. Every single one an example of what we can do here in the UK.

I’ll be back soon with a bit more detail about each wine.

Think England can't produce exceptional red wine? Think again!

For today's English Wine Week feature, we're pouring two English Pinot Noirs that show the fantastic character this grape can build on English soil. Both Hoffmann & Rathbone and Simpsons Wine Estate have captured the true elegance of Pinot Noir, with the classic blackberry flavour and silky finish you are looking for.
