Exploring the Archive’ is a new memory bank series developed by The Alasdair Gray Archive to allow a closer virtual look inside the Archive, sharing stories surrounding Alasdair’s life and practice.

Each of the four chapters of this series will allow a deep dive into different aspects of the Archive, including the infamous Green Chair, Alasdair’s ledger and the plan chest - all held within the Archive (located in Glasgow’s Whisky Bond) for research and learning purposes.

This chapter looks at the motif box file which contains a folder of ‘Designs’ - these emblems form a visual alphabet that Alasdair Gray recycled across the visual and literary throughout his creative life. The connected videos show @gravezink(Graduate Career Advantage Scotland intern) discussing their needle-felted interpretations of Gray’s ‘Brain Baby’ motif, @holly.ejk (Sculpture and Environmental Art placement students at The Glasgow School of Art discussing how she was inspired by Gray’s novel ‘Poor Things’ and the motifs used within it to create a series of bespoke nail art and @irisslipari (volunteer intern) who was inspired to get a ‘Brain Baby’ tattoo (by @eviesttt at @deviltowntattoo, Glasgow) after her placement at AGA.

Exploring the Archive will bring together old and new memories in one place, allowing you to experience the Archive and its many stories no matter where you are. This project has been curated by @holly.renniebrown from @mfa_curating.djcad. Thanks to @abbycarterfilm for additional content design.

Please pop see SYNTHESIS at @nicolls_glasgow open today and tomorrow, 10-5pm!

@decafdyke is the first creative to ever respond to the growing collection at @agnesowensarchive
They’ve made a bust of Agnes, ceramic landmarks from key places that she lived (which impacted her writing) as well as new typewritten prose. They are currently studying on @artwritinggsofa

@pestobillionaire has creatively responded to @thealasdairgrayarchive interest in marginalia. Taking assorted found words she’s woven them into sculptural forms made in wood and ceramic, some being displayed in old archive drawers from @hunterianglasgow . These words are resolved in an inky black font reminiscent of Gray’s own district cursive handwriting and Gray Display front made with @mobeltype @nearlymcguire and Edwin Pickstone. She is in fourth year @sea_gsa

Writers @zerospidercipher and @_maisiewills have collaborated on a beautiful riso printed text to accompany the show, pick up your free copy when you visit!

Thanks to @alasdair_watson for the excellent shots
