On Saturday, October 24, Lucy Holmes (@lucyholmes_designer), Founder and Creative Director of Holmes Studio (@holmes_studio), closes the SEGD Conference in Kansas City with a question that sounds simple until you sit with it: what does it mean to exist in the middle?

In her closing keynote, Point of Zero: Where Do We Start With Complex Projects, Holmes delves into how designers are trained to resolve things, to take complexity and turn it into clarity.

You can see that instinct at work in Hockney's Eye, the Fitzwilliam Museum exhibition her studio designed around David Hockney's lifelong dialogue between science and art. Rather than resolve that tension, Lucy's team built the whole visitor experience inside it, including a green-hued "Disco Tunnel" that let people physically walk through shifting perspective on their way between galleries. Winning a 2023 Merit Award, it's a clear example of what can happen when you let a question stay open instead of rushing to close it.

This perspective comes from more than 30 years working with institutions like Tate, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the National Gallery. Lucy started her career at Pentagram in London before founding her own studio in 1995, building a practice grounded in typography and shaped by Charles and Ray Eames: get close to the details, then step back far enough to see the whole thing.

She'll close out the conference by asking you to consider what you might find if you stop rushing from where you started to where you think you need to end up.

📍 We can't wait to see you in Kansas City, October 22-24.

Thank you to our Presenting Sponsors, Color-Ad, Inc. (@color_ad_inc) and Nanolumens (@nanolumens_led), for making this conference possible.

🚀 Here we go. International Design Day has already begun in some parts of the world.

Today designers everywhere are pausing to reflect on a simple but powerful question: why does design truly matter?

Over the past several weeks, SEGD CEO @cybelle_jones_designjoy sat down with leaders from across architecture, branding, experiential design, and cultural institutions. What emerged from those conversations was striking.

Across continents, disciplines, and decades of practice, the same things kept coming up. The same passion. The same stubborn, beautiful hope that design can do more. The same commitment to leaving this field better than we found it — and to building something worth passing on.

That spirit sits at the heart of this year’s theme, The Spaces In Between.

It’s not just about the physical thresholds we design, but the invisible ones — between the object and the feeling, between the institution and the community, and between where we are as a field and where we know we need to go. The places where intention becomes experience, and where our most meaningful connections take shape between people, ideas, and place.

⏰ Starting at 6:00 AM ET, SEGD will premiere 11 free conversations — one every 90 minutes through 9:00 PM ET.

Wherever you are in the world, there will be a moment made for you.

🎬 Subscribe to the SEGD YouTube channel and follow along throughout the day as each conversation premieres.

You can also visit segd.org to find gatherings hosted by SEGD Chapters across the United States, Canada, and in Riga.

Lucy Holmes is the Founder and Creative Director of @holmes_studio, the London-based, B Corp-certified design practice that created the visual identity for International Design Day 2026. Known for translating complex ideas into meaningful visual experiences, she has worked across major cultural institutions, including the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the British Museum’s Western Range redevelopment.

In “The Theme Made Visible,” @lucyholmes_designer joins SEGD CEO Cybelle Jones to reflect on the challenge of translating an abstract idea—The Spaces In Between—into a visual language. Their conversation explores how design can reveal the invisible moments where ideas become experiences, where people connect, and where meaning quietly takes shape.

Her work reminds us that design doesn’t only live in finished objects—it lives in the relationships between them.

For International Design Day 2026, SEGD presents The Spaces In Between—Cybelle Jones in Conversation, a series of prerecorded discussions with leading voices across design exploring the thresholds where connection, belonging, and human experience are shaped.

🎥 These conversations will stream throughout the day on April 27 on SEGD’s YouTube and LinkedIn channels. Watch from anywhere—or join an SEGD Chapter event near you and be part of the global celebration of design.

International Design Day is a global moment to recognize design and its impact around the world. Each year, designers across disciplines come together to reflect on how design influences culture, community, and everyday life, and to honor the ways design shapes shared experiences worldwide.

This year, ICoD (International Council of Design) and SEGD (Society for Experiential Graphic Design) invite the global design community to explore The Spaces In Between, a theme that focuses on the nuanced moments, transitions and thresholds where human connection is formed. Often overlooked, these spaces quietly shape how people relate to one another, how belonging is felt, and how meaning is created.

The 2026 theme was shaped through a collaborative process developed in close dialogue with ICoD and SEGD. The effort was chaired by Aki Carpenter (@akichan43), SEGD Board President and Vice President and Chief Creative Officer at RAA (@ralph_appelbaum_associates), with contributions from Traci Sym (@littlemesses), SEGD Past President and Principal of plus & greater than (@plusandgreaterthan), and Nu Goteh (@nuthervandross), SEGD Board Member and Principal of Room for Magic (@roomformagic_). The theme was stewarded by Cybelle Jones, CEO of SEGD, with the visual identity created by Lucy Holmes (@lucyholmes_designer) of Holmes Studio (@holmes_studio). Together, this group shaped a theme that positions designers not only as makers but as facilitators of connection and care.

This International Design Day, April 27, SEGD and ICoD call on designers everywhere to pause, reflect, and engage with design as a connective force, honoring the spaces that bring us together and shape our shared future. You can participate by hosting or attending forums, creating events inspired by the 2026 theme, or sharing your ideas and projects with us on social media!

A NEW JOURNEY WITH THE BRITISH MUSEUM

Lina Ghotmeh, said: “My team and I are thrilled to embark on this journey for the renovation of the Western Range of the British Museum. This competition has been an exciting process shaped by dialogue and multiple voices. I am looking forward to continuing this rich and collaborative process as we work towards transforming this section of the museum into an extraordinary space — a place of connections for the world and of the world.

My gratitude to Dr. Nicholas Cullinan – Director of the British Museum, to George Osborne, Chairman of the British Museum & chairman of the jury as well as all the esteemed members of the jury for their trust in selecting our diverse team. We are honored to contribute to this holistic and publicly engaging transformation that will shape the museum’s future in the years to come.”
