Tariff juice is bangin!

Cab Franc from Ningxia(we know where that is because we looked it up 15 times). Made with the Loire in mind but definitely its own thing. RIPE af black fruit with a little bit of that green bell pepper pryrazine-y thing that brings us right back to cab franc every time. Pumped to see where this goes over the next few days.

She’s juicy juicy and super limited. We got a case(minus one oops) and when it’s gone we may not see it again until next year 🤷‍♂️

Wine runs through Max Brondolo’s family. His grandfather made wine in Piedmont, his father was a serious collector, and Max grew up with bottles always on the table. But he didn’t plan on becoming a winemaker. He built a career in business, though he spent his earnings on wine and developed a deep knowledge of it over the years.

At forty, Max and his wife Stefania left Milan for Modena’s countryside to raise their family. The move came with what Max thought was a downside: Modena meant Lambrusco, which to him meant cheap, industrial sparkling wine. Then he tasted wines from producers like Vittorio Graziano and Gianluca Bergianti and realized Modena had serious depth, in its sparkling wine tradition and its range of overlooked indigenous varieties.

In 2016, Max bought a young Lambrusco Grasparossa vineyard plus an adjacent sixty-year-old mixed plot where a massive walnut tree grew. That tree became the estate’s namesake: Podere Sottoilnoce. He studied with Gianluca Bergianti for four years, learning biodynamic farming and natural winemaking, before releasing his first vintage in 2017.

Today, the estate farms 6.5 hectares biodynamically within a 14-hectare property of vineyards, woods, and meadows. Max grows varieties most people haven’t heard of: Trebbiano Modenese, Trebbiano di Spagna, multiple Lambrusco types (Grasparossa, Sorbara, del Pellegrino), and Uva Tosca with its multicolored berries.

Today we welcome @delinquentewineco from Riverlands, Australia via our pals at @honest.makers. Join us from 2-4pm for complimentary samples and meet the maker. Wines available by the glass and bottle as well. Plus, @offsetsandwichexchange has created a special hot dog menu for a fun summer wine/dog pairing. 🍷🌭

Delinquente creates organically farmed, minimal intervention wine perfect for the arid southern Australian climate. With that climate in mind, they thought of landscape of Southern Italy and the heat tolerant varieties that thrive there. So, it made sense to try their hand at growing these and it was a great success. Super interesting understanding of growing conditions. Across the board, their wines are perfect beer garden wines.

🚨Wine maker alert!🚨 We've got @swickjoe in the house pouring his amazing wines! 🍷 Plus, @lunarossacucina's delicious pizza and tunes by @y.k.hamilton & @young_tone. All thanks to @honest.makers. A native Oregonian, Joe returned home in 2013, bringing his passion for showcasing Pacific Northwest's unique terroirs. He partners with organic growers, keeping it natural with minimal SO2 additions. Cheers to fresh, lively wines!

This past September I was lucky enough to take some time off, do some camping, and visit a few wineries in Oregon. The first stop on my list was @swickjoe . I’ve been drinking Swick’s bottles since around 2018/2019 thanks to our friends over at @palacepubandwine

As I drove up the steep gravel driveway, I was surrounded by Pinot Noir plantings dating from 1976 to 1988, depending on the parcel. When I reached the top of the hill, Joe was already waiting with a full lineup of wines to taste. I was immediately charmed by the entire operation—just Joe, Maureen (his fellow winemaker), and her dog, Cowpie(slide 11). A two-person team that has been energizing natural wine drinkers since 2013.

If you’ve been to the Willamette Valley, you know the scene: rolling vineyard hills, state-of-the-art facilities, and an ongoing pursuit of “The Best American Burgundy.” And most of it is genuinely great. But Joe does things a little differently in Newberg, OR. Alongside Pinot Noir, Aligoté, and Cabernet, he works with varieties like Verdelho, Melon de Bourgogne, and Touriga Nacional. Though he uses the old Medici Winery facility—established in the 1970s—he sources most of his fruit from growers throughout the Willamette Valley and the Columbia Gorge in Washington.

Swick wines are full of life and character, with an old-world influence filtered through a distinctly new-world lens. My favorite over the last year has been his 2022 Willamette Valley “One Egg” Pinot Noir—a light and elegant Pinot aged for almost two years in a single 700-liter cement egg.

Thank you @honest.makers for making this possible.

Joe will be here on the 27th from 6–9pm.
There will be magnums.
There will be a special menu.
There will be good times and great wine. #MediciBoyz

The older the wine, the gooder the wine right?

Sundays are for cellar digging, lost gems pop up from time to time.. I often wonder how my decisions now will taste and feel later.. honestly 2013 in North Canterbury was one of those all rounders I kinda wrote off for crowd pleasers that say nothing… this bottle was a total surprise though.. eau de vie style red fruits and tight mineral/animal/sooty tones make it waaaay more interesting than first thought..

I keep trying to improve, innovate, challenge myself but sometimes the thoughts of the past were correct and the results delicious.. bloody glad I cracked this tonight!

(Close planted Pinot off a powdery limestone site, ripe very late, on skins 6 weeks, no additions until bottling, fantastic expression of the waipara gorge.. Gareth we did well)
