We celebrated the first fifteen years of the studio this week with friends, team members past and present, and a lot of oysters. Thanks to everyone who came to the studio and the many others who sent well wishes! To be in a room with so many supporters, participants, and inspirations is incredible. The community around the work is the greatest thing about the work. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

For the past year we have been working on a special space for the extraordinary @heartofdinner, an organization that combats food insecurity and social isolation with weekly deliveries of nourishment and care, hand delivered to vulnerable Asian elders in New York and Los Angeles. Since starting in 2020, they’ve made 250,000 deliveries of beautifully decorated care packages with culturally comforting meals sourced from small businesses and local farms that come with handwritten notes.

The space we’ve designed with @moonlynntsai and @yinchang is a studio that functions as their headquarters and converts to a venue for workshops and a place to gather with donors, volunteers, and friends. It has been lovingly built out at cost and with donations by our friends @a05studio, @ladiesandgentlemenstudio, @safar_rugs, @dahingplantsnyc and others. We launched the space this week with a dinner to celebrate the mid-autumn festival, styled by @fdk_florals and featuring dishware from @tortugaforma. More on the space to come!

We always strive to connect making with meaning, and we often talk about how powerful design can be when we can give shared values a tangible form in the world. Collaborations like this are a gift. We are so proud to have made a small contribution to this exciting new chapter for an incredible organization.

Felt like home. Now, as the summer is really drawing to an end, the idea of the perfect summer is what I’ve been thinking about and I suppose in many ways this came pretty close. Thanks NYC.

Over the years, we’ve often celebrated the Lunar New Year as a studio with a dumpling-making party. This year, we broadened the ritual, inviting friends from the design community to join us in decorating delivery bags for Heart of Dinner, an extraordinary organization whose SoHo headquarters and project space we are currently designing.

This is a dark time in America, especially for immigrant communities who are under assault and feeling vulnerable and afraid. Heart of Dinner was founded in 2020, during another moment of deep uncertainty, by @moonlynntsai and @yinchang with an initial goal of delivering 20,000 care packages with culturally familiar groceries and meals to homebound Asian seniors isolated by the pandemic. Today, they have made *250,000* deliveries, each one full of nourishment and care, contained in a lovingly decorated bag and accompanied with a handwritten note.

The space we are designing for Heart of Dinner will support this work and more. It will be a place for making, gathering, bag decorating, fighting food insecurity, and building community. At a time when many of us are asking how our work can have real impact, these kinds of gatherings are small but mighty examples. Friends coming together to put creativity in service of care can make a real difference.

The Year of the Horse is about movement, transformation, and urgent positive change. We are proud to be working with this organization, to host in this way, to contribute, and, yes, to test and enjoy a few dumpling recipes too: Classic pork and shrimp, steamed fish, and smoked tofu with mushroom and garlic chive.

We at MKCA wish you and yours a happy, prosperous, and transformational #yearofthehorse. Please follow @heartofdinner if you would like to support their work, or look for ways in your own community to show care and celebrate the diverse, multicultural fabric that truly makes this country great.

A great big thank you to @rebeccasmeyne for the fab photos and videos.
