Donor Appreciation Reception 💚✨
Grateful to volunteer at this Irvin D. Reid Honors College event as a WSU CFPCA Honors student. Connecting with students, scholars, and the donors who make so many opportunities possible — the conversations, the community, the celebration — such a meaningful way to start the semester.

What a beautiful day to plant native!!!

On Sunday, @greenwarriorswsu hosted volunteers to help plant our new native garden outside of STEM! We planted bergamot, coneflowers, wild lupine, black-eyed susans, and northern blazing star; all procured from our friends at @rougefriends. We are so excited for future blooms, and look forward to welcoming pollinators. A special thank you to the WSU Grounds department for their partnership!

The Detroit Youth Health Expo, which invites high school students to campus to explore careers and opportunities in medicine and health care, is an amazing example of what’s possible when you dream of something, team up, and do it.

Founded three years ago by Andrew Robinson, Mohammad Muntakim and James Wairagu, who were all Wayne Med-Direct students at the time and now in the WSU School of Medicine, the Detroit Youth Health Expo brings together our community of health professionals and young students to create more access to opportunities.

Provost Bloebaum helped kick off the two-day conference, speaking with undergrad and grad students during yesterday’s welcome. This year was the first time the event held programming for university students, and we can’t wait to see the Detroit Youth Health Expo continue to expand!

Welcome back to Research Warrior Wednesday, except this week we’re going international! 🌎💚💛

Meet Research Warriors Lynessa Asplund, Nina Thomas Taggart, and Safa Hussein!

Lynessa is a Nutrition and Food Science major, Nina is a Neuroscience major, and Safa is double majoring in Neuroscience and Public Health. All three are Med Direct students conducting research under the mentorship of Associate Professor of Anthropology, Dr. Jonathan Stillo.

What began as a project developed through Dr. Stillo’s Global Health course turned into collaborative UROP-supported research 2,000 miles away in Orange Walk, Belize!

The team partnered with Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal M.I., healthcare providers, and community leaders to understand how people experience diabetes education. Using the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ-24), interviews, and a rapid ethnographic assessment, the students explored what education sessions, screenings, and consultations meant to community members. They also took part as participant observers, including by helping prepare diabetes management kits with resources and supplies to support continued care.

The project gave the student team an on-the-ground perspective that humanizes and contextualizes their studies. For Lynessa, whose family has roots in Belize, the experience showed her the people behind the health disparities she learned about in the classroom. Safa saw how listening to communities and providing education can empower people to better understand their health. Nina saw firsthand how compassion and meaningful connections with patients are an important part of healthcare.

Now back at Wayne State, Lynessa, Safa, and Nina are analyzing their findings and preparing to present them. Their work demonstrates how UROP Research & Creative Project Award funding can not only transform an idea developed through coursework into original fieldwork, but also support collaborative and even international research.
