Amazing gig with @hoonbutton last night at #PrestonPark in #Brighton with @nickcaveofficial and @flaminglips. Beautiful performances, from the ridiculous to the sublime. Plus even @kylieminogue popped up for a once-in-a-lifetime duet with Sir Nick. Feeling very lucky to get tix.

Lovely to be a part of this wonderful exhibition curated by the great @sharonkingchai (pictured) celebrating the work of loads of super-talented illustrators. Such a fun private view last night at which I got to say hi to lots of familiar faces. And we came home with this masterpiece by @leigh_hodgkinson. The exhibition runs until 14 June in the Gallery at the Playroom near Archway, so go and check it out!

Better late than never... This post is about a month later than planned but hey, life's busy.

If you saw my previous posts about the wonderful weekend of the FCBG (Federation of Children's Book Groups) Conference, then you'll know how much I loved the entire thing. Sunday was no exception; a day filled with the most interesting talks about Kids' books, meeting some brilliant people who had clever things to say, and there was cake (thanks @nosycrow
for celebrating your birthday with us).

I was looking forward to meeting @eve_wersocki
as we've been planning a Bristol event for a while, and Matilda and I have been loving reading Clem Fatale together.
Eve was an inspiration! She did have the room in tears but her talk was the perfect balance of honesty about her struggles as a child with dyslexia, passion about writing and encouraging others to have the confidence to do the same, and also fun in the form of audience participation! Well done to @primarylibrarian
for volunteering to be the police officer and control the crowd (I did as I was told and didn't take a photo!)

Then a great panel session on non-fiction books, chaired by @librariansbookcase with @leigh_hodgkinson @samanthalewisauthor
and Susan Martineau
They shared some fascinating facts from their beautiful books, and I still need to do the cereal and magnet experiment from Elements Day!

The next panel session I was so excited for, and it was brilliant! It was a discussion about graphic novels, book snobbery, funny books, accessible books and so much else, with @jonlockcomics
@nichangell @catweldonauthor & @literallyneongas and expertly chaired by @janebroadis
Plus we were treated to live drawings from Nich and Nene 🤩

@tash_hyde and I introduced ourselves to Jon & Nich and they were the friendliest people AND they agreed to come on the podcast 🎉 Hurrah! Matilda's just read Tiny Hercules and has been giggling away!

The day ended with some rather ridiculous poetry from AF Harold before I lugged my insanely heavy book-filled bag home to the kids.

Thanks everyone who organised the weekend and chatted books to me! Loved it.

The look that says everything without saying anything.

We were on a train after a friend’s 50th. Tired, slightly wired, somewhere between conversation and silence. And Leigh just pulled this expression for a moment.

It felt very her. Observant. Wry. Already halfway to turning it into something creative.

I wanted to hold onto that.

If you’re new here, I’m Andrew Read. I’m an artist losing my sight, using art to hold onto memory.

Process note: graphite on paper

Three artists. One canvas.

I teamed up with Emma Lazenby @memollyandmarigold and Leigh Hodgkinson @hoonbutton to paint a portrait of our friend Dan to celebrate his 50th birthday.

There’s nothing quite like collaborating on a painting like this. Even if it means occasionally testing each other’s patience by painting over the bits someone else just finished.

But somehow it worked. What emerged was a vivid, energetic portrait that really captures Dan’s character.

Hopefully he likes it. You’ll see his reaction at the end of the video. Genuine delight, or straight in the bin? 😆

Emma is a fantastically creative person. She won a BAFTA for her animated short film Mother of Many back in 2010 and now runs ForMed, a company specialising in health-related animation.

Leigh is just as creatively unstoppable. After major successes in the animation world, she now writes and illustrates children’s books - having made over 30, with books published in around the world in many languages.

It was so good spending time with them both again. The sort of friendship where years can pass and you can still fall straight back into an easy, relaxed couple of days together.

Process note: three artists painting simultaneously on one canvas using acrylic, with graphite and posca pen details.

Wonderful to see so many friends and fellow authors and artists at @emirateslitfest! I still can’t get my head around what a fantastic festival it was, and how much work went into organising it. Big hugs all ‘round! 💛💛💛
