Join us this Friday to talk about Chinese fonts with Jason, Jasmine and Howsem! RSVP link in bio.

@byjasonli @jaziimun and @howsem will talk about books about Chinese fonts, and how Chinese type manifests in their own zines. Then we open up the floor for people to share about their experiences typesetting their zines as well as a general Q&A.

Jason will also be debuting his HONG KONG DIGITAL FONTS 2002-2026 zine at this event, and his research behind it will be weaved into the activities.

If you want to talk about your font choices in your zines, please bring them to share! Let’s all get inspired and read some zines together.

@howsem offered insights into the risograph printing process, followed by a collaborative zine-making session that participants took home as a keepsake.

@thegascollective spoke about the possibilities of risograph in curatorial practice, from the making of exhibition brochures and other materials, to exploring new ways of printing with artists.

The Heart Has Not Stopped is a 76-page Risograph artist book of photographs by Grace Wang, designed and published by Howsem Huang. Hand-printed, hand-folded, and hand-bound over nine months, each copy features a unique silk-printed cover in one of two colour schemes.

The book includes photographs from Wang's multi-year series exploring the porous boundaries between perception, memory, and the natural world. Created through in-camera multiple exposures on analogue film, the images weave together fragments of landscape, flora, and human presence into luminous, dreamlike compositions.

Conversation between the artist, designer and publisher, and Brian St. Denis, CONTACT Festival Manager, at 4pm.

Presented in conjunction with the artist's Open Call Exhibition at Daniels Spectrum, April 27 - May 29, 2026. Part of the 30th edition of CONTACT Photography Festival @contactphoto @danielsspectrum

Over the past five months, GAS Collective has visited Howsem Huang in his Toronto studio, learning about his process and the art of risograph. Here’s a glimpse:

“Tucked away in Kensington Market, Howsem’s studio is a vibrant haven for exploring all things risograph!

We have met with Howsem a couple of times (both in person and online!) since January to dive into his risograph printing practice. From walking us through the colour and printer mechanics to sharing his personal zine collections and book-designing journey, Howsem gave us an amazing look into the potential, challenges, and longevity of the soy-based medium.

We have had the best time brainstorming our upcoming workshop: participants are invited to bring in unique materials and create a collaborative Love Letter to a material that inspires their curatorial practice through risograph.”

Texts, Tiles, and Tastes:
Exploring Chinese Characters through Collage

💈In Toronto’s Chinatown, Chinese characters appear everywhere—on menus, flyers, storefront signs, and street corners.

💡What happens if we cut them apart and reassemble them through collage?
💡What if we rebuild them using everyday objects and food?

Join us for a 120-minute collage workshop exploring Chinese characters as lived forms in contemporary urban spaces. Beyond textbooks and language classrooms, these characters appear as visual forms embedded in everyday life, carrying traces of food memories and diasporic history.

The session will feature short presentations by invited artists Jason Li and Howsem Huang, who will share their artistic practices related to Chinese characters in contemporary visual culture.

After the artist talks, participants will create their own single-page collage using found texts and photographic materials. We will provide archival images from the Chinese Canadian Archives and other photographic materials. You are also welcome to bring your own!

No art experience needed!
Just curiosity, observation, and a willingness to experiment with Chinese characters.

cca 4.5th year time capsule

this year was a long and short one at the same time. a lot of crazy stuff happened at this time---covid, learning online, had to make a home studio, got my work shown to a publishing house i respect and hold with high regards, almost dropped out my final semester due to the craziness of deadlines and expectations i received, yet i was a double-major student that was in a little over my head working 20 hrs a week, had 4 studios, and needing to complete my physical thesis show within 3 months(only to finish the day of installation).

nonetheless i'm extremely grateful for my experience my last year as i had great teachers and friends that could see i was struggling and helped me a lot throughout my final year. i truly couldn't do it without them and finally, i made these posts as a love letter to my time as a student as i am well-aware of the sad news about @ccafinearts closing in 2027. it's heartbreaking to see as my time here meant a whole lot to me and how I view / make art in this world, so we will see what the future holds 💠💔🥂.

A sneak preview of an upcoming publication.
.
For the past two years, photographer @benhuang.photography has documented many temples in his birthplace, Taiwan, to reflect the overwhelming reality Islanders have been accustomed to. The project enabled him to publish a zine entitled “Neighbourhood Sanctums vol.1” with the idea of publishing a sequenced zine in a timely manner.
.
For planned vol. 2, Ben decided to collaborate with @howsem a seasoned book designer and binder, utilizing risograph to produce this publication, as an experiment.
.
The upcoming title will also be an inaugural publication by Hyoryusha Books
.

cca 1st year time capsule

to not knowing what the future held and almost not being able to go to art school to then moving to the bay area for more than four years of my life. i had many great first experiences here and i'm extremely grateful for the friends and mentors i made during this stepping stone of my art career. i couldn't have survived my first year away from home and for college, if it wasn't for the people i met here on the OG oakland campus.
