What's your wellbeing tip for good mental health?

Since it's Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme is taking action for good mental health, we asked visually impaired runner Henry Powell-Davies, what helps him feel better.

For more happiness, wellbeing and tips like this, tune in to the Happy Hour with Claire and Paulina each Monday at 1 pm, and again Thursday at 6 pm or Sunday at 10 am.

Transcript:

My wellbeing tip is taking a moment for yourself every day just to take a deep breath.

So, whether you've just had a really busy meeting or you've had, you know, a stressful gym session, it's just coming back and just doing what's called box breathing, where you spend time breathing in and out on the count of four.

And that really just helps you to calm your mind and your body and then put yourself into a positive frame of mind position moving into the next part of your day.]

We're big fans of Henry 👏

Later this year, Henry will not only take on his first ever marathon but also do it in support of his favourite charity - RNIB.

Henry was born prematurely at 25 weeks and has lived with sight loss his whole life. He first got into running at university but had to stop following an injury.

Last year, he decided to give it another go and take on his biggest challenge yet by running in the Amsterdam Marathon.

He visited our studios to explain to David what inspired him to do it.

[Video description: David interviews Henry in our studio. The camera starts with David, dressed in a pink hoodie, before cutting to Henry, who is sitting across from him in a light grey shirt.

Transcript: David: So, Henry, what was it that made you decide to do your first marathon and to raise money for the RNIB?

Henry: So funnily enough, I saw an advert on social media for fundraising for the RNIB. Someone was doing it for the London Marathon. That happens I think later this month, actually in April.

And as many of you maybe who listen and might know, people that run the London Marathon’s awfully oversubscribed, only one percent of people get into that. So, you know, I thought I'd set my sights on a smaller European marathon.

That's where the idea for Amsterdam came up. And yeah, for me, it was really about, you know, raising money. And it's not just about the target and the amount I'm fundraising, but it's about, you know, through my content.

So, I'm using Instagram and TikTok to document my journey and it's showing people with disabilities that they can, you know, step outside of that comfort zone, and have that confidence hopefully to get into running as well.]
