Why do shelters and rescues often see more kittens in spring and summer?

Cats are long-day breeders, which means increasing daylight helps trigger their reproductive cycles. As days get longer in late winter and spring, many cats begin going into heat.

A cat’s pregnancy usually lasts about 63 to 65 days. After giving birth, a female cat can return to heat relatively quickly, so multiple litters can occur during one breeding season.

That is why spring and summer are often known as kitten season.

Cat behavior tip of the day. Instead of only saying “no,” show your cat what to do.

Cats naturally seek height and they naturally scratch. When those behaviors happen on counters or furniture, it is often normal cat behavior in the wrong place. Redirecting works better than constant correction.

Try this:
Place cat trees or perches in areas you would prefer them to climb. Cats seek height, so give them a better option.
Put scratching posts right next to where they are already scratching. That spot is valuable to them, so make the post the easiest choice.
Make the “right” choices easy and appealing, and the unwanted ones less interesting.

Do not forget enrichment. Interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and regular playtime help burn energy, reduce stress, and prevent unwanted behaviors before they start.

We're really excited to introduce Mario, our first ever Paws & Pages featured adoptable pet! We've teamed up with our pals at @hs4gl to highlight an adoptable sweetheart once a month, and Mario is lucky number one! Can't you just imagine hanging out in the bookshop with him or snuggling up to him with a book at home?

A little bit about this big love bug: Mario is about 4 years old, and has done well with other calm dogs. He also walks well on a leash! Mario was previously adopted from another shelter but turned up as a stray in November, and unfortunately he was never claimed 😢. This sweet boy relished the quiet at the bookstore and made himself at home. Mario's adoption fee is SPONSORED, so if you think he'd fit in well at your house go say hello at The Humane Society for Greater Lafeyette!

Also, credit to our friends at Underground Books in GA who gave us the idea to feature some adoptable babies.
