H SHAJI & NS SARITHA

By @hshaaji

Both of us were student activists (and later members) with SFI, the student wing of CPI(M). I’m from a Muslim family, she’s from an upper caste Hindu family. Neither of us are religious; one could say we drift towards atheism. We slowly realised that we were attracted to each other & shared many interests such as literature, films, music, travel &, of course, politics.
My family was opposed to the marriage. Hers was hesitant, but her father, a trade union leader, stood by us. We exchanged garlands—and a ring at his request. There were no rituals, no spectacle. Our wedding feast was egg puffs and small packets of mixture. We will soon complete 30 years of being together.
For years, the marriage wasn’t even registered. What made it real was the life we built. Things softened after our child was born, in that familiar, filmy way families often return when love becomes harder to deny. It helped that we were both employed, and that I worked with a mainstream newspaper. Plus we lived away from home & financial independence gave us breathing room.
But distance and employment do not dissolve prejudice; they only make it easier to manage. Both our families faced different forms of social ostracism. The local mosque committee tried to initiate action against my family. So much for the easy assumption that Kerala is “progressive.”
Decades later, the world has changed in ways we never imagined. Recently, in my old college WhatsApp group someone called me a “love jihadi.” A lifetime of shared politics, parenthood, work, ordinary days. And still, our love is seen as an anomaly by some. Maybe that says more about the times we live in than it does about us
