Here is an excerpt from Michael Hsu about his thoughts on architecture and how we build joy through design.

Michael Hsu, FAIA, IIDA founded Michael Hsu Office of Architecture (MHOA), a fully integrated architecture and interior design firm, in 2005. Following graduation from the UT Austin School of Architecture, Hsu worked at OMA in the Netherlands before returning to Austin where he has practiced since 1998. Hsu is a member of the University of Texas School of Architecture’s Advisory Council. He is also a Past President of AIA Austin, which honored his firm as its 2016 Firm of the Year.

Attending the Texas Chapter's American Planning Association's State Planning Conference this week? Make sure to see Lionheart Principal Abby Gillfillan's panel discussion - Emerging Technologies in How Homes Are Delivered, and the Policies That Support Them

October 16, 2026
10:30 AM-11:30 AMCT
Meeting Room 1

How homes get delivered is changing fast. 3D printed construction is moving from pilot projects to large scale deployment, and pre-approved, modular ready building plans are giving cities a faster path to permit housing that used to take months of custom review. These technologies only reach communities if the policy environment supports them, and that environment is shifting too, from statewide housing advocacy to the recently approved federal 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act (H.R. 6644), which funds pattern book grants and directs HUD to publish zoning best practice guidelines.

This session is for planners and officials who want to understand what these technologies mean for permitting and housing production, and what policy support looks like on the ground.

Panelists will cover:

- How large scale 3D printed construction works, and where it fits alongside conventional building.
- How pre-approved, modular ready building plans are designed and adopted by cities.
- How statewide advocacy is building political support for housing reform in Texas.
- How the ROAD to Housing Act's grants and guidelines support these technologies.

Mitch Flora (Michael Hsu Office) will discuss pre-approved, modular ready plans and the opportunity to cut review time while maintaining design quality. Felicity Maxwell (Texans for Housing) brings the advocacy and political perspective, drawing on her work organizing the pro-housing movement statewide and her experience as a City of Austin Planning Commissioner. Abby Gillfillan (Lionheart Places) will connect these technologies to the statewide and federal policy landscape, including how the ROAD to Housing Act creates new pathways for adoption.

We believe small outdoor spaces should never feel like an afterthought. Pairing graphic cement tiles with warm wood creates an intentional, cohesive corner that invites you to step outside.

Clarksville Residence by Michael Hsu Office of Architecture (@hsuoffice)

Clarksville Residence is carefully placed along a quiet Austin street lined with traditional gabled houses. The sculptural form draws inspiration from the sweeping roofs of its neighbours while presenting a contemporary take on the cottage typology.

Large areas of glass bring abundant daylight into the interiors and, after sunset, allow the house to emit a gentle, luminous presence along the street. The design sits comfortably within its context while remaining clearly modern.

Clean doesn’t have to feel cold. A little warmth goes a long way in making a space you actually want to be in.

Our client wanted to feel the warmth of their second home in St. Barths every morning when making their first cup of coffee.
