‘I think I got something.’ That’s what I’d text my girlfriend. ‘Not sure how long this will take, but I won’t be home for dinner.’

For the past couple of months, I’ve been working on ISSUE 02 for @referenc.official.

Strip REFERENC down to its core and what you’ll find is a pursuit. Over early morning phone calls and nighttime texts, Hugo and I came to the conclusion that the process of creating isn’t far from Joseph Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey.

It goes like this. Everything is as it is. Something changes; adventure calls. You enter a period of trials and ordeals. Things are learned, insights are won. And then, from that experience, you create.

That arc runs through every conversation in this issue, with artists in their own right who have each walked that walk. A big thank you to @winne_ecktuh @daan_klaver @johann.alexis.von.haehling @stevenvanlummel @bnnyhunna @lucasjnrsmith

Figuring out how to approach this whole thing was anything but linear. But when something clicked, I knew dinner was off and I needed to zero the fuck in. It’s a privilege, a pleasure and a pursuit I love. Thank you @hugocastermans for the opportunity, and to @mxm__me for hitting a home run in graphic design.

Last week or so I asked for your recommendations on what I should be wearing, that I’m not, and I followed through on a good few of them and I’m wearing some of the results right now actually.

Five or six names kept coming to the forefront when I put that story up. Not brands I’d have found on my own, which was kind of the point. Mission accomplished.

The past week has been full of deliveries, packaging and try-ons. A mix of shoes, shorts, jackets and even some autumn pieces for those prepared like me. Some of it hasn’t come off since it arrived, so this week I’m talking about some under the radar brands doing great things right now.
