What a weekend! A big thanks to everyone who visited, traded and workshopped with us at this year’s Print Festival and Open Studios. It was great to see so many new faces, including Jenny, Maisie & co from Ironbridge Fine Arts, Alex & the gang from Hull Zine Library, and countless artists who traded with us for the first time! If you couldn’t make it down to the Mills, you can find all of our stallholders’ social media linked on our website. Give them a follow and support however you can! You might still be able to find a few bargains from the UK-wide Super Seconds Festival too. Visit the link in our bio for a full list of Print Fair participants. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY - Our next major event is Threads Textile Festival on 16th & 17th May. See you soon! 🥳 [Image 1 shows workshop tutor Jie Wang chatting to a participant around a workshop table filled with vases of flowers and photographic materials on the 3rd floor of the red brick interior 1912 Mill. Image 2 shows visitors looking around Mike Jone’s traditional signwriting studio, filled with painting equipment and wooden shelving. Image 3 shows Mill Host Amal smiling into the camera whilst sat at a desk under a black and white workshops sign in the 1912 Mill. Behind her are various groups of people taking part in workshops at wooden tables. Image 4 shows visitors exploring a busy print fair in the 1912 Mill. There’s a wide range of prints on display under strings of festoon lights in a red brick room. So nice to see 2 zines in @hullzinelibrary @makerspacehull that I made or was involved with. If you look close one is the collaged postcard “It wouldn’t be what it was if it was something that could last” and the other the bright pink and blue GAZE. The postcard one was made in 2020 in response to pandemic and its emotional impacts. GAZE was created by lots of feminists using a Riso machine led by @amandarigbydesign and @wearepaperrhino to support expression and response to exclusion. The zines are on the top floor of Hull central library and are free to access. The maker space is an amazing resource with super helpful and friendly staff who love making things and helping people access expensive and complicated equipment or try things out

HARI is holding its first Monday Musings session within the new building next week – 5-6.30pm on Monday 20th January, led by Sarah. Informed by John Divola’s twinning of photographs to extracts of text from Jean-Paul Sartre's Being and Nothingness (1943) in The Green of this Notebook (2009), writer and creative practitioner Alexander Stubbs asks you to follow a similar path. Time slipped away is a durational conversation collected across the span of one week. Through selection and response, a picture of a conversation written down by many hands will form in a small stack of paper. Alex asks you to visit the space in person, spend time there, and take note of the privilege which is having a space to exist in.  The outcomes of Time slipped away will be brought together to be displayed digitally and on the walls of HARI. Pertinent to the rationale of RE-VIEW, the conversation will begin with selected texts drawn from Chapter 6. of Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space (1956) – one of the books informing our seventh AiR, Dr Jill Howitt, in her writings which paired art spaces in Hull (starting with HARI’s) with public artworks. Join us at 5pm for hot drinks and a look around the space and artwork responses, with discussion and activity to start at 5.30pm. Alexander Stubbs is a creative practitioner working primarily in text-based and collaborative practice. He maintains a particular focus in community-building practices and shared and embodied knowledge. His work uses digital and physical archives to explore personal, interpersonal, and collective histories. Often Alex works collaboratively with others, and uses writing and research to shape the work he creates. Alexander was the first Artist in Residence of the RE-VIEW programme. #thepoeticsofspace #thegreenofthisnotebook #johndivola #beingandnothingness #textandimage #textandsite #mondaymusings #review #artresponding #discussingtexts #durational #conversation #underpinningresearch #artsresearch #hullartistresearchinitiative

Two opportunities to join us for the launch of our inaugural exhibition and the first look around our fantastic new home this week! The install is underway for our first show in our new space, and it’s the biggest HARI has ever presented. The RE-VIEW Preview of work produced during the 25 micro-residencies is Friday 25th, 5-9pm, followed by the launch event when you can see the work and the architecture in daylight from our extensive windows. We’re hugely impressed by the range and quality of the ideas and works being presented, and salute all of the artists for their commitment and brilliance in responding to the environs of HARI and to the concept of RE-VIEW. We can't wait to share it with you, so RSVP with free tickets through eventbrite, at: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hari-re-view-preview-tickets-1046430571007 www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/re-view-hari25-launch-tickets-1047148889517 #hullartistresearchinitiative #re-view #placeworkpotential #25 #25x25 #25francisstreet #artsresidencies #respondingtoplace #challengingpractice #researchinpractice #seeingpotential #crossdisciplinaryart #reviewpreview #whatwedonext
