LET’S MAKE HISTORY FOR HORSES. 💚

After 19 years of fighting for this day, we’re asking you to join us as @nyccouncil led by @speakermenin finally votes to BAN deadly horse carriages!

On Thursday, October 22, the City Council will PASS Romanch’s Law.! To everyone who has stood with us through this long, difficult fight: we cannot wait to share this moment with you!

🐴 12 PM: Rally at the City Hall Park fountain (between Broadway and Park Pl) with Speaker Julie Menin, our supportive Council members and our amazing coalition of advocates and New Yorkers.

🐴 1:30 PM: The full Council meeting begins at City Hall, where Romanch’s Law will be voted on and passed!

We have fought so hard for the day when these horses can run free at sanctuaries and no other family has to endure the grief Romanch’s family lives with. On Thursday, we take that historic step together.

📍Seating inside City Hall is very limited. We’re planning a nearby watch party where everyone who cannot get inside can gather to watch the vote via the Council’s livestream. Details to come.

Please be there. You helped make this possible. 💚

More coverage by @news12 of the two truck incidents we responded to during Kaporos week💔 alongside our rescue partner @humaneli

And the heroic act of Tanuki finding and ultimately saving the chickens on the second truck. Please consider adopting him.. More info with @lumsville and @rainorshinerescue

In the aftermath, we rescued 320 chickens and they are ALL now under our care. Some have already made their way to forever homes, while more than 250 are still in foster care, being quarantined, treated, rehabilitated, and prepared for transport to their new families.

The rituals may be over, but our work is far from finished.

Every chicken still needs food, medical care, safe housing, transport and eventually a loving forever home.

Please keep supporting us❤️
Our job isn’t done until the last chicken is home, safe, loved, and treated as the individual they are.

The final night of Kaporos in Brooklyn 💔

After witnessing days of suffering, our activists showed up one more time.. not to provoke, but to provide relief with water, watermelon, and compassion for birds who were still trapped inside crates.

Working alongside our expert avian veterinarian @dr.lyle.dvm and in cooperation with the @nypd visibly injured and distressed birds were identified, removed from the crates, and brought to our mobile triage unit for immediate medical attention.

Our triage team worked tirelessly to stabilize, treat, and comfort them.

And our activists showed what it means to lead with compassion ..staying focused on the birds, refusing to engage in provocations, and continuing to show up for them. We are so proud of all of you!

320 birds were rescued during Kaporos week. Because you showed up. ❤️

Many of these birds are still receiving medical care. Many are in foster homes waiting for transport to their new homes.

Kaporos is over. But our work is not.

Now comes the long road of recovery: veterinary care, food, foster care, transportation to their safe permanent homes.

Please keep supporting us. Every rescue comes with a responsibility to see that life through and we will not leave them behind.

Our beautiful foster Tanuki is a hero

On Saturday he alerted me to an awful smell coming from a u-haul truck on our block. Under a tarp, we discovered chickens crammed into tiny cages left to die in horrific conditions.

We contacted rescues and 911 repeatedly. Neighbors and volunteers brought food and water and did everything possible to keep the birds alive. John and his team from Humane Long Island, together with Kaporos Compassion saved 80 chickens from that truck that night.

Watching Tanuki bring comfort to upset neighbors throughout the day was a special thing to witness. Sadly he knows what it means to be abandoned and neglected. He was dealt an unfair hand in life but instead of letting it break him he takes every new day as a gift. And on Saturday he helped save lives.

Now we need to find him the hero he deserves. A forever family that will recognize the extraordinary soul he is and never let him be abandoned again. He deserves that so much.

Thank you to Humane Long Island, Kaporos Compassion, and every Crown Heights neighbor who stopped to help. And thank you, Tanuki, for leading us there

We’re honored to see the rescue of these chickens covered by the New York Post @nypost

What happened on the streets of NYC was heartbreaking, but it also showed what is possible when people show up.

Our small but experienced team worked around the clock during Kaporos week to rescue, triage, treat, and protect as many lives as we could. Hundreds of chickens have been saved so far.

Behind every number is a life, one that deserved care, compassion, and a chance to survive.

Thank you to everyone who stood with us, has opened their homes, volunteer to transport birds, donated, and helped in any way to get these babies to safety.

Our work is far from over so please keep supporting us 🫶

Thank you, New York Post, for helping bring their story to a much wider audience.

What we witnessed the last few days was heartbreaking and something I’ll never forget.

Up to 100,000 chickens in NYC alone are sacrificed every year to “pay for people’s sins”. Tossed in the air, their throats slit, their bodies thrown throughout the streets of Brooklyn after having been left suffering outside for days without food and water with no recourse left but to eat one another and eventually die.

This tradition and ritual is antiquated, inhumane, unnecessary, and a dangerous public health hazard with waste, blood and remains littering public streets.

But there was a glimmer of hope in all of this. Thanks to several tips, we were able to intervene and help save as many chickens as we possibly could. Neighbors called in and came out to help and offer support, organizations and rescues worked together resulting in hundreds of lives being saved, and for that, we are forever grateful.

Speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves 🐔❤️
