we had our old pals @humminghouse in the studio last night rehearsing for the celebration of life of the late friend/band member Josh Wolak. we only popped in for a brief second, but it sure felt like a big ol family reunion in there.

Headed to Nashville this weekend to celebrate the life of our dear friend Josh by doing what he loved the most - playing a whole bunch of music with people he loves. The night will feature performances of songs from all the projects Josh was involved in over the years - @humminghouse, Angus Whyte & The Irish Rednecks, Hickory Slims, and Genuine Joy. This Friday, come to Eastside Bowl to celebrate, sing, dance, and remember with us. ❤️

STORY TIME ⭐️ “Guiding Star” was born in 2011 when we were set up on a blind co-write by ASCAP in Nashville. It was one of those sessions where everything just clicked and within the first two hours of meeting and working together, we finished the first version of this song. ✨Both of us were busy with our own projects at the time, but would meet and continue to write over the years. Humming House cut two of our co-writes, “I Am A Bird” and “Nuts, Bolts, and Screws” on their album Revelries. “Lifted by Love” landed on Jamie’s Easy Target in 2022. But, for some reason, “Guiding Star” never made the cut, even after several demos.

Fast forward to the summer of 2023 ~ We decided to try for a duo EP. After going through all the songs we’d written, we decided to revisit “Guiding Star.” The song was nearly there but felt slightly dated. Over a zoom session, we finally finished it in 2023… 12 years later! When we finally recorded it, it felt like Jordan Lehning, Jamie Dick, Juan, and Jon Estes helped us capture the idea in the way it was always meant to be. Bobby and Melody Chase added the string icing that helped us finish it out.

Now, 14 years later, “Guiding Star” is finally OUT and is a story of great perseverance. If a song is good… it’ll find its way in the right time to shine. ✨ Thank you to everyone who has been listening to it these past two weeks!Our EP, So Many Melodies is out on 2/21 and you can pre-save it at the link in the bio. 🔗🙏🏼⭐️

Joshua Wolak aka Genuine Joy @6enuine9oy - It's been said over & over what an apt moniker it is because Josh truly was, as he was once described to me, "a hug personified". The day before yesterday his close friends & family said goodbye to his earthly body. He passed on to the next world in the earliest hours of the new year & I've spent the last week & a day since then too heartbroken to know how to put anything into words. But I don't feel like I can move forward without acknowledging the impact that he had on me during the fleetingly brief time that we worked together.

After meeting when FALL @falldance danced in a music video for Humming House @humminghouse, Joshua reached out to me in early 2018 with a vision to turn the album release concert for his newest work into an full-length rock opera. What he didn't know is that I was coming directly out of one of the most difficult & toxic projects I'd ever worked on & taking on another large collaboration wasn't anything that I was looking forward to.

However, it only took two conversations for me to become completely enamored by his vision, his spark, his enthusiasm, his talent, & his compassionate empathy. The first time I listened to the album I was almost bowled over by how stunningly, heart achingly, joyously beautiful it was.

Joshua & I proceeded to spend the next 9 months in countless conversations about the nature of life & art & faith & everything else under the sun as we developed visuals & movement to match the music, & an emotional arc to give the audience a peek into the rawness behind the album that chronicled his crisis of faith.

In an exceptionally rare case for a dance/music collaboration, Josh attended rehearsals with the dancers almost from the beginning of our process. Usually he would just noodle around on the piano in the background while we developed choreography, always ready at a moment's notice to play live for anything we needed - or more often to pipe up with a quip, a joke, or a profound observation. His presence brought a lightness to all those around him and to our entire process.

The world lost the kindest, most brilliant, most creative soul today. Josh - you were a true light and a force for good. From the day we met in the dorms to the nights playing music on front porches to the long philosophical discussions on religion and the meaning of life to the meal we shared just a handful of weeks ago. Your joy was infectious. Your creative mind was an inspiration. Your brilliance was unmatched. Your positivity and strength in the face of insurmountable odds was incredible to witness. But what I’ll remember most is your kind heart and your love for all people. You made the world a better, more inclusive, more loving place.

What an honor it was to know you. What a genuine joy it was to create with you and witness you create with others. How lucky we all were to have you in our lives. You will live on in our hearts forever. We will all carry your flame. Love you so much my sweet friend. ❤️

Indulge me while I go through a roll of 35mm film from tour with @humminghouse in 2015 - I know I have another roll somewhere that I’ll have to find. I ALWAYS had my camera with me on tour and to be honest I’m shocked it wasn’t ever stolen or broken into 1000 pieces. We were not gentle with our equipment 😅
