History isn’t just being contested. It’s being erased.

This month, Harriet Tubman’s image was removed from the National Park Service website, along with references to slavery. This deliberate erasure reflects a broader pattern of narrowing whose stories get told.

In this climate, a project near to our hearts has taken on additional urgency.

Since 2020, the Baldwin-Emerson Elders Project has been building a digital archive to capture and celebrate hundreds of oral histories with Black, Brown, Asian, Latine, Indigenous, and queer elders—people whose wisdom and experiences are critical to understanding American life but are often excluded from official records.

To date, we’ve collected 230+ oral histories and 1,000+ images, making them available for free. Since launching, the Project’s stories of love, loss, joy, survival, and courage have touched thousands of people around the world.

We are also heartened by the Project’s nomination for a Webby Award, considered the “Oscar” of the Internet. This nomination stands to amplify the incredible voices we’ve been gathering at a time when their risk of being silenced is growing.

If you’d like to help amplify these important histories, check out our archive, have conversations about its stories, and consider voting for the Project by April 17th—it takes less than a minute.

Established by author Jacqueline Woodson, the Baldwin-Emerson Elders Project captures and celebrates the untold stories of activists, storytellers, and community builders who have witnessed and shaped great change in American public life.

We worked with Woodson’s organization, Baldwin For The Arts, to collect over 230 oral histories and 1,000 personal mementos from communities across the country. At a time when the stories of minoritized people are increasingly subject to book bans, the Elders Project offers a platform for preserving and sharing the stories of Black, Brown, Asian, Latine, Indigenous, and queer elders.
