Meet David Burke!
.
David Burke’s career as an artist is defined by a balance between teaching, studio practice, and public art. Over the past two decades, he has created impactful murals, exhibitions, and collaborative projects that bridge creativity, community engagement, and cultural storytelling. He is the founder of Hungry Ghost Productions, a Bay Area mural collective dedicated to celebrating diversity, social justice, and collaboration. Burke’s studio work addresses ecology, climate change, and the intersection of the natural and built environment. His teaching career spans from Chiang Mai University in Thailand to the Academy of Art University in SF and Cal State East Bay.

MY OTHER MURALS!
Besides Sinbad Voyage, I have created numerous murals in the Bay Area. Here are nine! three (Bam Citadel, Ishtar Gate (Iraq) and Greek Columns 2004) in San Francisco at a Mesopotamian cuisine restaurant on Van Ness Ave, and six Seeing Better themed at an eye clinic in Berkeley, 2019. The last photo is a detail from restored Sinbad Voyage in Berkeley.

Had the opportunity to chat with David Burke, a noted muralist based in Oakland, CA, at the Haldan Gallery. I first met him earlier in the day when he gave an exclusive view of his life as an artist.

Keep making art. “You never know who is watching.”

“What’s Left Behind” by David Burke exhibition is truly worth a visit at the Haldan Gallery, October 8 - December 4. You’ll find his earliest work all the way to ones from around 10/15 years ago. Bring a friend for discussions. I was particularly curious of his series on consumption. Check out “Fox in the Henhouse”!

The Haldan Gallery is located within the campus of Lake Tahoe Community College in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Gallery Hours are Monday-Thursday, 11am-5:30pm and Sunday, 12-3pm.

David and team at Hungry Ghost is based in Oakland. Their work can be seen throughout the city. Check out their passion wip project: Love Letter to Oakland. Learn more at https://dburke.org/

Thank yous:
David Burke - for sharing his amazing art
Elizabeth Vargas - gallery coordinator, for the beautiful installation of David’s art
Julia Schwadron Marianelli - for bringing David and his art to South Lake Tahoe

Summer may be over, but the memories we created together will last far beyond the season. ☀️

From our youth programs and mural tours to community events, artist conversations, and everything in between, this summer was made possible because of you.

Thank you to every artist, youth, family, partner, volunteer, donor, and community member who showed up, shared their talents, and supported our initiatives. Your continued support helps us create

spaces where art, culture, and community can thrive.

Here’s a look back at a summer full of mural arts, connection, and community. 🎨✨

Thank you for being part of The BAMP.
