The Edinburgh graffiti mural has now been removed due to apparently 12 complaints to the council, presumably from people who identify as robots. You can collect the print as a memento. Link in bio

“Where will my garden bloom when it’s taken over?” Four instances to make you stop and think — “wait, this is poetry” via @robertmontgomerystudio at @huntedprojects Edinburgh (slide 1), @yearning.ok (slide 2), @wikipedia (slide 3), and @nycstreetspoetry (slide 4).

Poetry is expansive.

Image description: Slide one – a photograph of a rainy day with words, written on a wall, that spell out, “God came in my dream she said, kill the robots now before the robots kill us.” Slide two – a photograph of some electric candles on a shelf. Over them are the words, “ God, it’s me again and again and again and again again and again and again and again again it’s me.” slider three – a photograph from Wikipedia of a large lightning strike over a large cityscape. Under it are the words, “ this Atlanta, lightning strike may have inspired awe.” Slide 4 — a photograph of some graffiti on the side of a van (likely). The graffiti is pink with a tag with a flower alongside the words, “ where will my garden bloom when it’s taken over?”

Today was a very special one at Hunted Projects. We were honoured to welcome the extraordinary Shirley Manson to the gallery to view Robert Montgomery’s newly opened solo exhibition, The Edinburgh Saints.

Shirley, the voice of @garbage and one of Scotland’s most iconic artists, also features in Robert Montgomery’s painting The Edinburgh Saints, the work that shares its title with the exhibition.

Thank you so much for visiting, Shirley & Billy! 🤍

The Edinburgh Saints is on now at Hunted Projects, 8/4 Murieston Lane, Edinburgh. Come and see it for yourself.
.
The exhibition is open for viewing by appointment. Please email info@huntedprojects.com or DM to arrange a time to visit the exhibition.

I was drawn to Elaine Speirs’ paintings first enjoying my unsureness of what I was seeing.

The fact that I’m extremely short sided since my childhood I learned not to trust my eyes but the ability of my brain to understand deep down.

Under her obvious lines there’s a mesmerizing flow, as if water is dragging the paint, as if she painted on the surface of water. I feel like if I stand in front of the painting enough, I can see the movement and what’s underneath will reveal itself.

In this series of paintings roses are just a starting point for her, what’s more important is in between them…

As she says it’s all about layers when it comes to life, and these layers are not always comforting.

For Elaine Speirs’s exhibition at Hunted Projects, Robert Montgomery has written “Writing Ophelia’s Hands”, a text tracing the calligraphic line in Speirs’s paintings to Twombly and Coltrane, and reading the exhibition’s central painting Black Pearl as a quiet response to Millais’s Ophelia.

Robert Montgomery and Elaine Speirs were classmates at Edinburgh College of Art in the 1990s, and the essay carries that history with it. Montgomery writes of watching Elaine’s hands move “with a kind of musicality” as she painted, and of noticing that in her recent work, all the figures have disappeared.

His closing line stays with you: “Maybe Elaine is painting what Ophelia sees when she is drowning.”

Writing Ophelia’s Hands is available to read in full via the link in bio.

Thank you, @robertmontgomeryghost , for such a generous and considered piece of writing ❤️

Robert Montgomery will have a solo exhibition at Hunted Projects, opening on the 2nd October 2026.
