My 729th Reel: Anti-Fascist Parenting

The state-sanctioned horrific murders of Renée Nicole Good and Alex Pretti have been weighing heavily on my mind, as I’m sure they have been for many of you. The violence is relentless. The anger is palpable. The sadness is overwhelming.

Lately, the little energy I have at all has been spent trying to take care of my kids. My hugs have been a little tighter and longer these past few weeks, as I try to protect them (and even myself) from the harsh realities of the world.

I’ve always heard people say that parenting the next generation of activists is part of the revolution, but I hadn’t fully understood what this really meant until more recently. Every critical conversation and moment of empowerment destroys a piece of generational trauma. Every lesson they learn as children, especially lessons that I often didn’t learn until I was a grown adult, takes us all one step closer toward collective liberation.

I’m trying my best to connect to hope, even when it feels so naive or out of reach. But I also understand why it would be difficult to feel any hope at all.

I just pray that we can all take care of each other until hope finds us again. And until then, I hope everyone gets those tight, long hugs that you/we all need.

Anyway, I hope this reel helps all the parents who are trying their best to continue to try their bests. You all are raising the next generation to be better than this one. And that is truly revolutionary.

The late Filipino Folk and Rock icon Herber Bartolome gave his blessing to Deep Foundation to sample his song “Tayo’y Mga Pinoy,” which was used in their 2009 single, “Children of the Sun.” ☀️🇵🇭🎶

“I’m a F-I-L-I-P-I-N-O!” was yelled alongside Bartolome’s chorus as each verse was a collective exhale being caught in between the land we live and the land of our origin. 🗽🏝️

It’s just a reminder that people were speaking about this long before the memes and the TikTok’s. 🗣️🎙️

I’m honored to re-introduce this song on the finale of Filipino American History Month. Peep game Pamilya. 🇵🇭✌🏽🙏🏽

Thanks again to Heber Barolome, producer and music video director as well as emcee Hydroponikz, Ill Poetik, Ceejay, Mugshot, Proseed, Kiwi, Nomi of Power Struggle, and Koba for allowing me to share the creative legacy this song has provided.

My 571st Reel: Maarte

In Tagalog, “maarte” can be translated as many different things, depending on the context. For many Filipino Americans, it can typically be defined as the state of being unapologetically dramatic, performative, and/or over-the-top. People can be maarte through their fashion, their humor, and their facial expressions, AND they can be maarte in their theatricality, movement, or commanding of any room they enter.

I made this reel primarily because I was going through my camera roll and found lots of random footage of my friends being so maarte. But after compiling all the footage and completing the final product, this reel became a simple reminder to celebrate our joy.

In recent weeks/months/years, many parts of our community has been targeted - alongside so many other historically minoritized groups. Specifically, women and LGBTQ+ rights have been threatened, attacked, and diminished - on federal, state, and local levels. And while they may try to take away our legal protections and may attempt to prevent us from living our best lives, they can never take away our joy, our love, and our happiness.

So, to anyone who needs to hear this - please don’t ever stop being maarte. Please continue to dance, to sing, to laugh, and to have fun. And please don’t ever let any person or government dim your light or shine.

I’m finally able to breathe after a very hectic yet beautiful #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth. I was able to physically celebrate in four of my favorite cities: New York, San Diego, Irvine, and Washington DC. Here are a few of my favorite moments from the month.

1) Afterparty for Suitkace’s incredible cabaret show at the Green Room
2) FANHS San Diego @fanhssandiego hosts encyclopedia book event at Miramar College
3) White House afterparty at Purple Patch with @nurseunseendoc fam (and @mschristy_tx sequined dress)
4) FANHS NY FAM Event at PS1 Moma with three of Dolly’s kids
5) Guiang Sisters visiting NYC
6) Michigan fam visiting NYC @bernadette_in_az
7) Kababayan at UCI Reunion @ucifilipinoanteaters with founders @manong_f & @otterlove4ever
8) Ernabel Demillo @ernied - hostess with the mostest of FAHM NY FAHM event
9) FANHS NY @fanhsmny Board & Alumni & Headliner @maritesszurbano at FAHM Open Mic
10) Broadway Barkada @broadwaybarkada Group Photo at Proud Mary’s at Festival of New Musicals at World Stage Theaters (written by@jenniferpazofficial & @anthonyfedorovmusic and starring @emilyborromeo @rennie11 @itsjoanalmedilla @jaygeemacapugay @emycoligado and more). My favorite thing about this photo is that everyone (especially Emy) is like a Tita calling for everyone else to come join the picture. When more people finally joined, Jaygee started singing “Happy birthday” for fun, and we all sang along. And then someone said “Wait, whose birthday is it?”, we said “I don’t know!” Moments later, I realized “It’s Larry Itliong’s birthday!” Of course it was.

Today I officially rang in my 40th year of life, but I got a head start on the celebrations this past Saturday with my show “Lost Luggage”. It was a transition between my creative ventures. I’ve been a bboy for the last 25 years and over the last year I’ve delved into the world of cabaret. To mark that milestone I did a cabaret about my time as Suitkace. With a sold out house and many more people tuned in online I finally got to share my journey with everyone who I’ve met through the various iterations of my life. Entering a new decade always feels like a momentous occasion and this one is no exception. Despite feeling lost deep down inside and hiding behind Suitkace, I’m finally comfortable being my unapologetic self. I still got a whole lifetime to see what else I can accomplish. Thank you to everyone who’s supported me along the way. A huge thank you to the “Lost Luggage” team for helping me bring my story to life. And a big thank you to my wife for always pushing me to follow my passions.

I was 23 years old when the towers came down. That was 23 years ago. That means that half of my life was pre-9/11 and half of my life was post-9/11.

Sometimes it still feels like it was yesterday. But when I look at these photos over the years, I am reminded of how long it has really been. But even then, the trauma of it all still feels visceral.

Sending love to all New Yorkers and to all those who lost someone they love.

And may we all do everything we can to make sure more innocent lives aren’t lost and no other families have to experience the unspeakable pain that was caused on that day.
