Spent over 24 hours running downwind wing and wing on our current passage from Tonga to Fiji, a feat that we previously believed may be impossible! Not only did the hydrovane hold through the gusts, it was a super smooth and reliable course. The better we learn to sail, the better she steers!

We saw everything on our way from Namibia to Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, from 33 knots and a seas that was like a two-headed snake and hitting us from both the stern and beam to three days of no wind and a flat nothing. Here are some scenes from the heavier wind days. We got hit by a rogue wave that broached us, turned all of my canned goods into weapons and stole my solar panel. On the very same rogue wave day we accidentally poisoned ourselves due to a gas leak on my oven and my constant baking of cookies and cakes. Then, no less than 24 hours later we ripped the cowl vent plus half the dorade box off during our first jibe together.

Also very grateful for my @hydrovane 💕 Mine is named Ruby and she is truly the captain of this ship. After the broach it took her no less than 1 minute to get right back on course after Juniper righted herself from a horizontal position and was vertical again. Bless Ruby, bless.

06. Sept. 2026

Wir konnten endlich wieder die Segel setzen und für ein paar Stunden bei richtig gutem Wind segeln. Die meiste Zeit hatte Monika das Steuer in der Hand und sichtlich Spaß daran. Auch unsere Windsteueranlage durfte zeigen was sie kann – und wurde von uns, für richtig cool befunden.

Zum Schluss mussten wir doch noch etwa zweieinhalb Stunden motoren. Am Abend machten wir schließlich an einer Mietboje vor Premuda fest. Ankern ist hier eher schwierig, da es keinen besonders guten Ankergrund gibt.

Our rudder broke in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. 💀⛵

No land.
No harbour.
No mechanic.
No other boats around.
Just us, our sailboat, and thousands of miles of ocean.

For a moment, we had no control over where we were going.

Good thing we are professionals at improvisation;
With the tools and materials we had on board, we started working on a solution — hoping the damages where not more extensive, and MacGyvering a solution to try to make it to land.

Sailing is an extreme crashcourse in adapting to what life throws in your direction, trusting each other, and staying solution oriented even when shit hits the fan.

We had not seen any boats for two weeks; out here, it’s really just you and the big vast ocean.

What would you do if your rudder broke thousands of miles from land?
