POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Throughout the year, Katherine Kovacs has been developing a new series of fragmented bronze bottles, each containing an interior world that offers an esoteric exploration of past lives and the people we once were.

Hairwork and remnants of bronze pours are suspended in amber resin, transforming these vessels into reliquaries of memory.

Inspired by Joan Didion’s On Keeping a Notebook:
“I have already lost touch with a couple of the people I used to be.”

Join us for an Open Day at the Crucible Galleries and Studios
Sunday 25 October | 10am–3pm
16 Tyne Street, Ōamaru

Katherine Kovacs will discuss her work and the many processes involved in its making from 11.30am–12pm at the Crucible Gallery.

At 1.30–2pm, current resident artist Emma Stretch will talk about her art practice and her time working in the Crucible Studios and Gillies foundry.

Emma's Sinter Pour!

An exciting day for the team as we sintered the new addition to our family of furnaces.

Emma's work was the maiden pour.

Emma has been walking and tracing her tracks during her time with us.
Her work has an element of surveying and cartography, but while maps can be loaded with political and colonial history, Emma's walks and subsequent maps reveal a mapping of herself over many days.
"...the mapper mapping oneself, rather than the mapper mapping potential acquisitions.'

The crucible studios will be open Sunday 25 October from 10am until 3pm.

Come meet Emma and see what she has been up to.
Emma will be talking about her practice and her time here as resident artist from 1.30pm until 2pm.

Following a long trip south from Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, we were delighted to welcome our 2026 Crucible Residency artist, Emma Stretch, to Ōamaru.

Emma has settled in and begun exploring the town through walking and mapping her daily journeys, while considering the many converging influences that shape our people and land as she develops her practice here at the Crucible Studios.

We’re excited to share Emma’s experiences and the work that emerges during her time with us over the coming weeks.

A special thank you to the Ōamaru community, who have already extended such a warm welcome to Emma. We’re looking forward to seeing where her time here leads.

The Crucible Residency felt like walking into a time capsule, situated in the Heritage District of Oamaru, filled with machinery from the 1950s it felt very fitting making my Giant Barrel of Monkeys on this residency. The whole experience filled me with nostalgia for a time I never experienced. Vast open spaces, once filled with hundreds of workers now down to just a handful. @crucible_artist_residency

It’s awesome to see the @hyndsfoundation fighting to keep the Gillies foundry alive and operating.

Here’s a few shots I took on my Pentax 67 while in residence!
