I am very happy to present my work “HELPERS” at @friezeofficial Frieze Week as part of the exhibition “SPOILED PROPAGANDA: grafting bio-futurism”, curated by @phyein.collective at @hyphastudios @hyphacurates

📍 Hypha Studios, Euston Tower, London
🗓️ 8 October - 7 November 2026
Thu-Sun, 12-6pm

Helpers explores care as a form of release: the act of creating the conditions for another living being to emerge, rather than determining what it should become.

The work begins with the pigment-producing bacterium Janthinobacterium lividum, followed by traditional Japanese shibori technique. Silk is folded, bound and shaped according to an intentional pattern, creating a framework for the biological process to develop. The resulting violet pigment grows through the fabric, a process that cannot be entirely predicted or controlled, allowing the material to become a memory of both human intervention and microbial activity.

At the centre of the work is a fascination with creatures and the many ways of being together. Microorganisms inhabit worlds largely invisible to us, sensing, adapting and responding to their environments. The violet pigment produced by Janthinobacterium lividum, violacein, is not simply a source of colour but a bioactive compound with antimicrobial and antifungal properties: it is part of a biological strategy for defence and survival. Transferred onto silk, these properties become part of the material itself, introducing the possibility of a textile that carries not only colour, but a form of biological protection.

Helpers considers liminality, becoming and release as conditions of working with living systems. There is a moment when making moves beyond control: when the maker has to step back, observe and allow something else to take part.

The work reflects on a simple question: what does it mean to care for something without deciding what it should become?

@camillacccole founded @hyphastudios because she knew art needs to live in the city, filling in every empty building, not just museums or galleries. To make it happen she’s built a charity dedicated to matching artists and empty real estate spaces for pop-up exhibitions. I’ve been a long-term fan of what the team at Hypha does and thank you @willjennings80 for suggesting I feature Camilla in Season 2 of #LanderTalks!

👉👉👉 swipe the carousel, read Camilla’s story and get in touch with Hypha if you’re an artist, a patron (a charity always needs funds!) or have an empty unit on a high street that you’d like to reinvigorate between rents.

This Frieze Week Hypha Studios are running several brilliant exhibitions. At their Southbank location I’ve seen hylē, curated by @anya_mokhova_, and Assembly by @royal_sculptors featuring beloved artist, creative partner and friend @rosburgin, so check those out and go see some cool art if you’re in town.

#LanderTalks is a series where I talk to women building businesses in the cultural economy. New episodes drop on Thursdays.
