Today, June 19th, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and calls us to reflect on freedom, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality.

This day also holds a personal significance for us, as it is our dear friend, Sgt. Joe Harris’s birthday. Today would have been his 109th, and it is the first we mark without him since his passing earlier this year.

Sgt. Harris served his country with pride during WWII, even as that same country treated him as a second class citizen and denied him the liberties afforded to others. Throughout his life, Joe always stood firmly on his belief to “love one another.” On this Juneteenth, we remember his quiet strength, his dignity, and his unwavering commitment to service in the face of injustice. We are grateful to have ever known such a man.

His life is a reminder of how far we have come and how far we still must go. ❤️ 🇺🇸

We had a truly special visit this month with our dear friend, WWII Veteran Mr. Joe Harris, and his wonderful family. At 108 years old, Joe continues to inspire everyone he meets, and his legacy with the Triple Nickels is nothing short of amazing! 🪂

Joe and his family have become like family to us, and it was an honor to celebrate him in such a meaningful way. One of the biggest surprises of the day was presenting him with his Drop Zone Dedication and a letter of appreciation from @rcpt_usa leadership, along with a custom airborne pendant featuring three buffalo nickels…a tribute to his service with the legendary Triple Nickels. This special honor was presented by RCPT members @garr2344 and Matt Anderson.

A huge thank you to @imjordandavid for making sure this was a day to remember, overnighting the portrait of Joe’s Drop Zone signed by those who participated in RCPT’s Operation Perseverance.

We even connected via video call with paratroopers getting ready to jump, who sang Blood on the Risers in his honor. It was a powerful day spent celebrating a man who made history and continues to inspire us all. We love you, Joe!

While on duty helping to combat the LA Fires, USMC Veterans and active Wildland Firefighters of @preservingthestories stopped by to see our incredible hero, 108-year-old Joe Harris. Presenting him with a Pulaski was such a thoughtful and meaningful gesture!

Sgt. Harris served with the 555th Parachute Infantry Regiment during WWII. Known as the Triple Nickels, these trailblazing men were the first all-Black parachute infantry battalion and served heroically as smokejumpers, fighting wildfires on the home front.

Your visit and recognition mean the world to Sgt. Harris and all of us. It’s truly heartwarming to see today’s heroes honoring the heroes of the past. Thank you!!
