I was nervous to moderate my first panel but @uscten gifted me with exceptionally talented panelists to interview in the podcast space which made it incredibly rewarding! Someone alert San Diego Comic Con that I am now ready for a moderator gig in Hall H! #TenTalk #USCTen

Last night our Family Assistance Center won a national award from the National Association of Counties (NACo) for our volunteers’ substantial impact after the storm. We made a public space available for local community organizers to help find our neighbors. With the help of @blueridgepublicradio and the county’s social media, volunteers just kept showing up to help reunite families with loved ones. A volunteer commented, “it was like catching lightning in a bottle. I’ve never seen so many people come together as a community to work towards a common goal like we did at your office.”

A huge shout out to everyone pictured here and the thousands of volunteers who aren’t pictured.

WAILING EARTH episode 1:
"A Farewell for One Willow"

“A Farewell for One Willow” is a short documentary about herbalist and author Asia Suler’s return to her beloved One Willow Apothecaries in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, and her reflections on the path ahead.

In Asia's words: “People say that the depth of our grief matches how profoundly we loved. If this is true, then the overwhelming emotion that we feel when we witness all the ecological loss in our world today is a measure of how deeply we love this planet and, perhaps, how profoundly the Earth loves us in return.”

After Hurricane Helene, we set out to document the loving essence of grief. We wanted to make space for and embrace grief’s unvarnished expression, to receive its raw release as an alchemical chorus, to share stories about the journey through loss one experiences after a natural disaster: the flood after the flood.

Wendell Berry once wrote, "To go in the dark with a light is to know the light. To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight..."

Our docuseries WAILING EARTH is about people in Western North Carolina who, after enduring Helene’s devastation, go dark with grace. It is a harrowing and holy act for the heart to traverse acute grief; we hope this docuseries honors the wellspring of emotion within our community.

The first episode of WAILING EARTH, set to be released later this month, is called “A Farewell For One Willow,” and features herbalist and award-winning author Asia Suler.
