POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A night at Shenavall Bothy, but this time there was a little more to the story than just finding shelter in the mountains. 🏔️

I’d planned to visit this remote bothy in the Scottish Highlands, and got the chance to document something pretty special — a work party organised by the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA).

A group of volunteers had made the journey out here to help maintain the bothy, working on drainage and improvements to keep the building protected from the elements. No big machinery, no easy access — just people giving up their time and putting in the hard work to keep this place standing.

Later, I spent the evening in good company around the open fire, listening to stories, sharing experiences and learning more about the unique culture of bothying. It reminded me that these places are about so much more than a roof over your head. They’re about community, generosity and a shared love for the wild places we come to escape to.

The MBA looks after around 100 bothies across the UK. Most are free to use, and many are remote shelters that would struggle to survive without the dedication of volunteers and the support of its members. The work is funded mainly through memberships and donations — a lot of effort goes into keeping these simple shelters open for everyone.

So if you’ve ever spent a night in a bothy, here’s a little reminder to give something back. Take your rubbish with you, leave the place as you found it (or better), respect the Bothy Code and the people who come after you.

And if you can, consider joining the MBA — membership is just £25 a year — or making a donation. It helps fund the materials and repairs that keep these special places alive.

I spent my time there documenting the people behind the bothies, and I’m excited to share a little glimpse of their work with you.

A little reminder that these places aren’t just kept alive by the mountains around them, but by the people who care enough to look after them. ❤

All I want is mountains, sunrise, and morning coffee.

Some of my favourite full frames from Monte Rosa.

Three full days above 3,000m — sleeping in high-alpine huts, moving across endless glaciers, climbing through brutal cold and thin air, surrounded by some of the most dramatic landscapes I’ve ever experienced.

This is exactly why I carry a camera into places where every extra gram matters. Some experiences are simply too wild not to capture.
