Did you know that depending on the air current, flying #squirrels may glide 150 feet or more from a height of 60 feet? 🐿

The Longinoja Park, the #Helsinki GreenInCities pilot area located between the Malminkenttä and the old Malmi district, is populated by autochthonous species from the Longinoja valley and flying squirrels that need to be preserved.

The Malmi district is recognized as an area at high risk of segregation and suffers from deteriorating public spaces and socio-economic challenges while the new Malminkenttä is attracting new residents with new spaces under development.🌲

In this context, Longinoja Park represents an opportunity to connect these areas and overcome social barriers.
GreenInCities plans aim to address issues such as heat islands and heavy rains and apply circular economy principles using sustainable construction.

By developing the meadow environment and implementing small-scale ecological stormwater management solutions in the Longinoja stream area, biodiversity will be protected while new routes for pedestrians and cyclists will be developed to enhance better mobility infrastructures. 🚴🏽‍♀️

A Digital Adventure in Eleusis with HERIcraft!

Students from the 2nd Elementary School of Eleusis had a unique experience with the HeritACT team, who visited their classroom and transformed it into a digital, sustainable world inspired by their favorite game, Minecraft! 🖥️🌍

The students immersed themselves in HERIcraft, a version of the popular Minecraft game, redesigned as an interactive, digital version of #Eleusis.

After a brief introduction to the project and the goals of this interactive experience, the children had the chance to explore Eleusis digitally, interact, and (re)create structures based on city landmarks and monuments of industrial heritage.
In the HERIcraft environment, they engaged in mini-games, learning about the values of the @neweuropeanbauhaus while interacting with classmates, seamlessly blending play with learning! 🎮🤝

The children’s enthusiasm was evident!Advanced and beginner players alike supported each other through questions and answers, with some even collaborating to build unique structures, combining their creative strengths.

The educational visit ended with a deeper appreciation for participatory design and a promise from the project team to return. HERIcraft continues its journey through the schools of Eleusis, inspiring students of all ages to connect with their city’s cultural and industrial heritage and to interact with it through the power of digital play. 🏛️💫

As part of Azure's new Climate Issue, we take a look at six projects pushing the boundaries of sustainable design.

1. Earth Forest Campus – Though 3D-printed architecture is typically made of carbon-intensive concrete, the Forest Campus (a full-scale prototype for sustainable and affordable construction) was printed on-site using local soil and natural materials sourced from just a few metres away — and completed in only 10 days.

2. Erosion Mitigation Units – Called EMUs, the 200-centimetre-wide, 1.6-tonne dome-shaped modules aid in the alleviation of shoreline erosion by reducing the height and energy of incoming waves, support and offer protection to a range of marine organisms even during low-tide, and create an underwater sculpture park for snorkellers, scuba divers and swimmers to explore.

3. Bylaws for Biodiversity – As municipal bylaws thwart the creation of naturalized spaces, dubbed “habitat gardens,” and put up barriers at odds with sustainable practices, a dedicated group of conservationists are urging local governments across Canada to support — and promote — the planting of vibrant, regenerative gardens as an alternative to water-intensive manicured lawns.

4. Taisugar Circular Village – Designed by Bio-architecture Formosana, the masterplanned community and test bed for circularity, Taisugar Circular Village, unfolds in visible modules of prefabricated panels, an exterior steel structure and solar panels prominently affixed to gable roofs.

5. Portland International Airport – The showpiece of the airport's reimagined Main Terminal is an undulating mass timber roof that spans 3.64 hectares, with all wood sourced within a 300-mile radius from responsible suppliers.

6. Wild Mile – Part of a larger restoration project to remediate the Chicago River, the Wild Mile (an initiative by @skidmoreowingsmerrill and @urbanrivers) provides a new gathering space and river access to the entire community.

We’re excited to launch the PENCE initiative in collaboration with ArsLonga, Fab City Foundation, Fab Lab Barcelona and Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia. 🚀

What is the PENCE Initiative?

The Power Europe Narrative for Civic Ecology (PENCE) Initiative works to fast-track Europe’s ecological transition by empowering creative industry professionals to use their creativity in service of climate solutions. 💫

Through PENCE we’re mobilising and activating the power of the creative industry to lead the way. Driving change by connecting innovative solutions with the policymakers who can turn ideas into reality.

🤝 Together, we’re shaping a sustainable future for Europe.

We were at Institute for @iaacbcn @fablabbcn in the “Soft Confluences of the Textile and Fashion Industry”, organized by @modaccat and @elisava.school , coinciding with the Barcelona Design Week.

We got the chance to attend a series of talks and presentations followed by an exhibition focused on future sustainable practices under the ☂️ umbrella of Transitions.

🌵 ⚡ The collaborative spirit in the room was nothing short of electrifying, reminding us of the power of community in driving change. ⚡🌵
