For seven years, I was with a man I thought was my boyfriend.

When we met, my family was falling apart, and I was basically on my own. He took care of me. I truly believed my survival depended on him. So by the time the abuse started, and then the exploitation, leaving felt impossible.

Here’s why the overlap matters. When people only see DV, they can miss the tr*fficking. When they only see “pr0stitution,” they can miss the relationship that led them there.

15 years ago I went back to an adult industry convention to pass out gifts to the ladies with the ministry I worked for called Treasures. This was my experience going back into that atmosphere to love on the women 🩷 @iam.a.treasure

P.S. I have increased my vocabulary to say more words than "interesting" 😂. I swear every interview I'm screwing something up!

Being an expert witness on a trafficking case was one of the greatest honors of my career. (Thank you @imrebeccabender for referring me🤗)

23 years ago, when I started Treasures, very few people (even attorneys) understood the realities of coercion, trauma, or why survivors don’t “just leave.” Today, courts are increasingly bringing in expert witnesses to help juries understand the dynamics of trafficking and trauma so they can evaluate the evidence without relying on myths or stereotypes.

I never had my day in court. Standing in that courtroom to help another survivor pursue justice was deeply meaningful.

And the next time you receive a jury summons, remember: you never know whose life may be changed by your willingness to serve.
