I’m in Seattle! My film SŪNNA (Listen) plays at Tasveer Film Center, Wednesday at 5pm 💃🏽Please come through and say hello 🥰
✨✨✨
FUN FACTS:
-Slide 1: It’s full circle to screen SŪNNA at Tasveer because (go to slide 2)
-Slide 2: This same project (formerly called “Tuner”) was a top 3 finalist for the Tasveer Film Fund in 2023! Although I didn’t win then, one of the Tasveer jury members landed me my manager, and one of the audience members at my pitch (Mira Nair’s Lead Producer of AMRI) is now one of my close friends and OG supporters across all my projects 🙏🏽
-Slides 3 & 4: After not winning Tasveer, I ended up winning a grant from CAPE to make this film, leading me to one of the most supportive communities & some of the best collaborators I’ve come to know and continue to work with today 🥹

And, due to a recent win and the loving support of nonprofit org Shine Global, SŪNNA is now Oscar qualified ✨✨✨

Persistence, discipline, and an open heart seem to carry me on a beautiful ride ❤️

“I think we forget things, if we have no one to tell them to…”

Luckily, I didn’t have that problem with this lot.
We came. We told our story. We broke box office records.
And that’s all that matters.

@rachel.chavkin @riteshbatra_2666 @frereslazour @reshmagajjar @thetelseyoffice @nikdodani & Mark @berkeleyrep , thank you for bringing me on to this project that has changed me and my understanding of love, story telling, & human connection forever. My dear @arjunbhasincostume @giantmiles @nkoci @rockingthechogue @sheelaramesh @shanaferguson @kathleengallardo, the crew, & the music team: may your lunches always be delicious and warm.

This story is so special, and that has been made ample clear by all of you wonderful people who came & supported it, night after night.

It’s incredibly bittersweet to say goodbye to a show that has now been a part of me since November, but luckily… stories like these live on. So! To be continued.

Love,

Chavkin Ka Chand 🌙

Last night, we closed @thelunchboxmusical at @berkeleyrep, and this show has truly made real life feel like a dream.

I don’t typically make sappy closing posts these days, but I’d be remiss to not acknowledge how significant this experience has been to me as a Desi artist and a South Asian-American.

What an honor it’s been to swing this production and get to be a part of a story that not only feels so unique and magical but is also so rife with beautiful, multi-faceted representation of Desi people. To know that so many people of South Asian heritage–younger and older alike–got to see pieces of themselves portrayed in a story that affords them nuance, in a way that western media so often does not, is a gift in and of itself. Likewise, to know that so many non-Desis got to see the full range of humanity of a people that have so often been obscured or exoticized to them has been a privilege and a long time coming.

Getting to share the stage with this unbelievably brilliant company has been a gift; getting to watch them work and play and craft has been a daily lesson in artistry, humility, and collaboration. And getting to know this show inside and out with an incredible team of fellow swings @hashini_a @aksharagunda @lvalayil has been a welcome and thrilling challenge. Being a swing is so hard, but they all make it look easy 🫶🏽

Thank you to the brilliant creative team @riteshbatra_2666 @frereslazour @rachel.chavkin @reshmagajjar @neeta_thadani @giantmiles @nkoci @sheelaramesh for gifting us and trusting us with this story.

This story is simultaneously heartwarming and heartwrenching, full of light and of sadness, and has that special specific-yet-universal quality we’re all always chasing after. Here’s to a long life for THE LUNCHBOX, and I hope you all get a chance to experience not only seeing this show but also an artistic endeavor that fills their soul as much as this one has filled and continues to fill mine. It’s love, it’s life, it’s… lunch ✨
