Africa Needs More Than Nurses At The Bedside. It Needs Nurses In The Laboratory, Too!

A nurse in a coronary care unit presented research on a potential vaccine against antibiotic-resistant MRSA at the 2026 UK Clinical Vaccine Network Conference.

Simeon Olatunde's work offers a powerful reminder: healthcare professionals can contribute to scientific discovery, not just deliver the care that discovery makes possible.

But a bigger question remains for Africa.

How many promising research ideas sit in our hospitals, waiting for the funding, mentorship, laboratory access, and institutional support needed to develop them?

We cannot build an innovation-driven healthcare system if research remains an activity that busy healthcare professionals are expected to pursue in their spare time.

Africa also needs to invest in its healthcare workforce as a research workforce.

Our latest editorial explores what Nigeria and other African countries can learn from this story.

YOU BUILT IT. BUT DOES HEALTHCARE REALLY NEED IT?

A beautiful interface.

Impressive technology.

A promising pilot.

Yet the product struggles to gain adoption.

Why?

Perhaps the people expected to use it were never involved in designing it.

Healthcare is complex. The problems patients face are not always the problems clinicians see. And the people who use a product are not always the people who pay for it.

For digital health founders, innovation must begin with listening, research and validation — not assumptions.

In his latest commentary for Care City Media, Dr Nwankwo Austin explores the difference between building for healthcare and building with healthcare.

The takeaway: Understand the problem. Involve the people. Test your assumptions. Build for adoption, not just launch.

Africa’s Healthcare Economy Is Big. So Why Are So Few Of Its Healthcare Companies Truly Continental Giants?

South Africa dominates private hospital care. Durban-based Aspen Pharmacare has built an international pharmaceutical footprint. Egypt has developed substantial domestic drug manufacturing capacity.

Meanwhile, Nigeria — Africa’s most populous country — still has relatively few healthcare businesses operating at comparable scale.

The difference is not simply population or healthcare demand. It also comes down to capital, manufacturing capacity, market structure, and the ability to expand across borders.

Our latest analysis maps major players across hospitals, pharmaceuticals, insurance, and diagnostics—and examines what their size reveals about the structure of Africa’s private healthcare economy.

The question isn't just who runs the biggest healthcare businesses today.

It is what Africa needs to build the next generation of healthcare giants.

Swipe through the carousel, then join the conversation:

What is the biggest barrier to building globally competitive African healthcare companies: access to capital, regulation, infrastructure or market fragmentation?

MENTAL HEALTH BEGINS IN OUR COMMUNITIES!

What happens when the awareness campaign ends, the hashtags disappear, and people are left to navigate their mental health struggles alone?

For many, the real challenge isn’t just recognising that something is wrong. It’s finding the courage to speak up, knowing where to seek help, and accessing the support they need without fear of judgment.

Through our MindCare Community Mental Health Outreach, Care City Media is championing the importance of bringing mental health conversations closer to the people who need them.

This World Mental Health Day, we are reminded that meaningful change requires more than awareness. It demands compassionate communities, informed conversations, accessible mental healthcare and the willingness to listen without judgment.

Because mental health is not just a hospital issue, it is a community issue.

To the healthcare professionals who double as tech savvy, as procurement managers, venture capitalists, CEOs, CNOs, CMDs, Floor managers, human resource managers, quality managers, head of marketing, etc…

To the ones building the future of healthcare, the once who have damned the consequences, who shuffle between clinical practice and the art of building, the ones who practice bedside nursing during the day and code during the night, to the ones clerking patients at the emergency but building a tech product in the call room.

The pharmacists, radiographers, health record managers, lab scientists, the ones who engineer our equipments, the ones who draft out our processes; we see you.

We acknowledge the work you’re putting in here in Africa from Soweto to Kampala, from Johannesburg to Lagos. We see your work.

Today is for you. To honor, appreciate and respect you. Thank you for bringing us this far. Thank you for where you are taking us to. We have a space for you. We are rooting for you and we know that one day, you would become the future.
