Friendships as a midlife neurodivergent woman are tough. And I’ve spoken about the loneliness of neurodivergent motherhood a lot recently so this post might seem like something of a plot twist. 🙃

Because one entirely unexpected consequence of oversharing about my ADHD, my outpouring of honesty on the hormonal hell-fire of perimenopause and how bloody hard I’ve found parenting neurodivergent children is that I’ve made some incredible connections with exceptional women through doing so.

October is ADHD Awareness Month and this year’s theme is A Community of Support, which feels like a very good excuse to celebrate some of those women I’ve found through this app.

And these eight are by NO MEANS an exhaustive list. There are so many other humans whose work I admire, whose experiences resonate with mine and whose accounts have made me laugh, cry and/or just feel a bit less alone in the general shitshow of life. I’ll tag some of them in the comments below.

And while I’ve got you (if I still have!) this Sunday my community for neurodivergent women @wearenottoomuch are meeting for our first Neurodivergent Women’s Walk in East London. It’s completely FREE, we’re meeting at 11am at @tunspacee10 in Leyton and you absolutely don’t need to know anyone to come along.

This is the image I wish I’d seen at 19, when I first walked into my GP’s surgery to ask for help with my mental health.

It’s also the image I wish every OCD therapist had in their back pocket.

When you’ve spent years trying to understand why your mind works differently, feeling misunderstood, isolated and ashamed, the power of seeing your experience reflected in a simple image can’t be overstated.

Over the years I’ve had people tell me they’ve burst into tears when they first saw this doodle because, for the first time, they felt understood.

“Yes. That’s exactly it.”

That sentence is one I’ve heard hundreds of times.

For me, seeing OCD as a cycle also helped everything click into place. I could finally see where Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) fitted into the picture …and why resisting compulsions, rather than the thoughts themselves, was the key to recovery.

If this image helps you feel seen, understood, or helps you explain OCD to someone else, then it’s done exactly what I hoped it would.

If someone had explained OCD to me like this years ago, it could have saved me decades of confusion, shame and misunderstanding.

The way OCD is often portrayed can be wildly misleading. My hope is that this helps someone recognise themselves, understand a loved one, or simply see OCD a little differently.
