J.V.C. F.O.R.C.E. — “STRONG ISLAND” (1987)

🌊 LONG ISLAND IN THE HOUSE. BEFORE THE WORLD CAUGHT ON.

Before the island became a name-drop in countless Hip-Hop conversations, J.V.C. F.O.R.C.E. put it on wax and made sure everybody heard it.

“Strong Island” is pure late-’80s East Coast energy. DJ Curt Cazal lays down a heavyweight funk backdrop while AJ Rok and B-Luv trade bars with that raw, back-and-forth chemistry that made early Hip-Hop feel like a block party captured on vinyl.

And that horn blast? Absolutely unmistakable.

The production flips Freda Payne’s “The Easiest Way to Fall” and “Unhooked Generation” into a rugged, rolling groove. Then comes the iconic “Strong Island!” shout from Chuck D’s “Rebel Without a Pause” — a perfect connection between two sides of New York’s Hip-Hop identity.

But this record was about more than samples and a catchy hook.

J.V.C. F.O.R.C.E. helped put Long Island on the underground Hip-Hop map at a time when New York’s boroughs dominated the conversation. Their anthem gave the local scene a voice, a rallying cry and an identity of its own.

Released as a single in 1987 and featured on their 1988 debut album Doin’ Damage, this is the kind of record that reminds you how much history can live inside one break, one horn stab and two MCs trading lines.

No fancy tricks. No overthinking. Just funk, personality and hometown pride.
